Etown Boys Top Lebanon for First Track Win
It may have taken the boy's track and field team nearly half of the regular season but a 93-57 win over Lebanon on April 19th gave the Bears their first win of 2022. Juan Lopez led the way with two solo and two relay wins. Lopez won the 100m and 400m while getting help from Owen Dommel, Zachary Verghese and Carlton Wise to win the 400m relay and from Dommel, Varghese and Taidou N'Dikwe to win the 1600m relay. Verghese (200m) and Wise (pole vault) also picked up wins while Nathanael Moynihan added wins in the discus and javelin. Caleb Fuge (110H), Branden Shaud (300H) and Zackery Lippold (shot put) also picked up wins.
The Lady Bears enjoyed a 102-39 win over Lebanon with wins coming from all corners. E-town won all three relay races starting with the work of Jillian Wivell, Lilah Drager, Julia McAlonis and Olivia Shenk in the 3200m. Addy Haak, Lily Heistand, Genna McDonald and Drager closed out the meet with a win in the 1600m relay. In between it was Jadea Pinkerton, Haak, Heistand and McDonald winning the 400m.
McDonald also won the 100m and 200m with Ally Evans doubling in the high jump and triple jump. Shenk added a win in the 300H while Ruth Wright claimed the 100H. Elizabethtown took all three distance races thanks to the work of Sierra Kapcsos (800m), Ali Fink (1600m) and Julia McAlonis (3200m) while Charlotte Hershey (shot put) and Annabelle Price (discus) also claiming firsts.
A few days prior, the Bears tangled with Solanco in another Section Two clash. The Lady Bears posted a super-slim 75.5-74.5 win while the boy's fell by a 100-50 final. Once again, the girls were able to claim all three relay races. Drager, Jordan DiRisio, Kapcsos and Fink earned the 3200m relay win while Heistand, Drager, Haak and McDonald claimed the 1600m relay. Haak, Heistand and McDonald picked up some help from Felicia Morris to win the 400m relay.
Fink added wins in the 800m and 1600m while Haak was tops in the 200m.
All the Lady Bear field points came from the high jump where Evans took first, McAlonis claimed second and Julia Sikora tied for third.
The boy's side posted six victories with two coming in relay races. Verghese, Dommel and Lopez took part in both, getting help from Tavan Schoenberger in the 400m relay and from N'Dikwe in the 1600m relay. Lopez added the top time in the 400m, Dommel took 200m. In the field, Wise topping the pole vault standings and Moynihan the discus field.
BOYS' LACROSSE
As the boy's lacrosse team rounds the final bend for the home stretch of the 2022 season the Bears are searching for their first victory. Losses to Garden Spot, Manheim Township and Red Land dropped the Bears to 0-11 with six games remaining.
A 15-0 setback to Red Land on the 13th opened the three-game stretch while a 20-3 loss to Township on the 19th ended it. In between was a 10-3 loss to Garden Spot on the 18th. Elijah Poulos scored all three goals against Manheim while Matthew Cruz, Carson NyeSmith and Bryce Kauffman split the scoring against Spot. Joe Zink added 23 saves to his season.
GIRLS' LACROSSE
Sometimes a win is not just a win and a great example of that would be the girl's lacrosse team and their 7-6 victory over Cedar Crest on April 14th. The win was not only the Lady Bears first of the season, but it was also the first since April 30th, 2019, a span of 28 games.
"The pieces finally came together," said head coach Cheyenne Benson. "From the top of our attack all the way through Syd in goal and the girls on our bench cheering on their team. Every single player had a hand in our win. I'm beyond proud of the heart, hustle, grit and persistence they've shown all season."
Pope needed all seven of her saves to secure the win with Moira Shott and Josie Spayd scoring two goals each. Aiesha Rios, Danielle Bruno and Charley Lengel-Cramer each scored once.
SOFTBALL
The softball team finished a Manheim double header on April 13th and 14th, topping Township before falling to Central.
E-town needed a late game push to get by Township, 9-8, with Ava Fair poking the game winning hit in the seventh. Fair added another RBI with a first inning single while Julie Zook finished with three RBI on two hits. Brooke Bryan survived all seven innings for the win.
One day later the Lady Bears ended up on the wrong side of a one run final, losing to Central 6-5. Breonna Edgell got the start and took the loss with Bryan covering the final three innings in relief. Fair, Sydney Stewart, Astyn Calaman and Leah Aldous provided the offense with RBI singles.
VOLLEYBALL
The boys' volleyball team followed an April 14th win over Cocalico with back-to-back losses to Central York and Lancaster Mennonite.
Elizabethtown opened with a 25-14 win over Cocalico but needed four games to finish the job after the Eagles 28-26 game two win. E-town bounced to win 25-21 and 25-16 to finish the match. Dylan Shepperd had 25 assists and 19 digs while Damian Tobias added 18 kills.
The Bears traveled to York on the 18th and dropped a 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 match to Central York. Shepperd had nine assists and seven digs while Murray had seven kills.
Elizabethtown returned to the L-L on the 19th, falling to Mennonite by a 3-2 final. It appeared the Bears were on their way after winning the first two sets 25-17 and 25-23 but the Blazers stormed back with wins of 25-17, 25-17 and 15-9 to steal the match. Murray finished with 17 kills with Tobias and Elijah Miller adding 17 digs each. Shepperd added 27 assists.
BASEBALL
The baseball team added two more losses to their season tally after dropping games to Manheim Township and Hershey.
Elizabethtown used a trio of pitchers against Township with Kaden Kimble getting the start and loss. Thaddeus Poff and Kaleb Daley covered the final two-plus innings. Josh Rudy and Cole Chrzanowski combined for a quick two run rally in the seventh to account for the offense.
One day later the Bears lost 9-8 to Hershey. Luis Perez-Alfaro was the star at the plate with a two hit, four-RBI game. Ben Heckman, Alex Baker and Cade Capello enjoyed single RBI games. Isaiah Shayter was on the hill to start but it was Pike Burkett taking the loss after 1.2 innings of relief work.
TENNIS
The boy's tennis team wrapped up their 2022 regular season with wins over Ephrata on the 13th and Penn Manor on the 19th to finish with a 10-4 mark. Trent McBride and Luke Risser enjoyed singles wins in both matches while Steven Dupler claimed the final singles win against Ephrata. Quinn Dolan and Jack Nyveldt picked up the remaining singles wins against Penn Manor.
In doubles it was Jared Louie and Emery Morgan posting one win against Ephrata and Dolan and Aiden Blyler the other. Louis teamed up with Nyveldt for a doubles win against Penn Manor while Morgan and Dolan claimed number three doubles. McBride and Risser finished the sweep with a number one doubles win.
