ELANCO Library Slates Programs

The "Oceans of Possibilities" Summer Reading Program will kick off with a Dive Into Summer event on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will include opportunities to register for the Summer Reading Program, food, live music by the New Holland Brass, special guests, and a Community Resource Fair. Adults can glean information, resources, and assorted giveaways from various organizations, including 4-H/Penn State Extension, Alcoholics Anonymous, Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County/Parents as Teachers, CrossNet Ministries, and Friendship Community. Children may enjoy interactions with miniature ponies, the opportunity to explore the Bookmobile, parachute play, STEM activities and crafts, and more. Admission is free.

"Oceans of Possibilities" will run from June 4 through Saturday, Aug. 13, and will include a reading challenge and prizes for completing the challenge. The library will offer activities and special events for people of all ages; visit the aforementioned website for more details.

Activities will include Sounds of the Ocean: Music and Movement on Wednesday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m. for children from birth to 6 years and their siblings; Ocean Sensory Story Time on Saturday, June 25, at 2 p.m. for children from birth through 6 years and their parents and siblings; Preschool Story Time every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 3 to 6 and their siblings; Toddler Thursdays weekly at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 1 to 3 and their siblings; LEGO Creation Club on Thursday, June 23, at 6 p.m. for children age 8 and up and their siblings; and STEM Saturday on June 25 from 10 a.m. to noon, a drop-in program for families with children of all ages.

Teen Tuesday Clubs will meet on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Students in grades six through 12 are invited to attend.

In a Prehistoric Oceans program on Monday, June 13, at 1 p.m., children age 5 and up will examine fossils and principles of geology to learn what life was like in ancient oceans.

A short lecture, Creatures of the Deep Ages, will be available to children age 10 and up on June 13 at 6 p.m. The lecture will explore the lives of creatures that live in the deepest parts of the ocean as well as the scientific expeditions that led to their discovery.

For adults, the library will offer the Readers' Roundtable Book Discussion on Monday, June 6, at 2 p.m. and Hooks & Needles: Yarn Craft Club on June 13 at 6:30 p.m. The craft club is open to knitters and crocheters, including beginners.

The Center for Aquatic Sciences will present a 45-minute program for people of all ages on Wednesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. Attendees will learn about some of the unique creatures that call the ocean home.

Mlanjeni Magical Theater will present "Notions of Oceans and Things Beyond Compare" on Thursday, June 16, at 1:30 p.m. This East African-style theater program uses acting, puppets, magical illusions, folk music, and dance in traditional storytelling. Audience engagement is included.

A Comic Book and Animation Workshop with Keville A. Bowen will be available to people age 10 and up on Monday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m.

Penn State Extension's Master Gardeners will offer a Pollinator Story Time on Wednesday, June 29, at 11 a.m. in celebration of Pollinator Week.

Those who want to support the library may enter a drawing to win a Weber Spirit E210 grill, utensils and a gift card to Yoder's. Tickets are available for purchase at the library. The drawing will be held on Sunday, June 12.

Community members who dine at Park City Diner, 884 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, or Knight and Day Diner, 3140 Lititz Pike, Lititz, can have 10% of what they spend donated to the library. When checking out, people should tell the cashier they would like to donate their sale to the Eastern Lancaster County Library.

Dr. Seuss books will be given away in drawings every other Monday. Anyone who places a set minimum donation into the Dr. Seuss birdhouse downstairs in the Children's Library may fill out a ticket to enter the drawing. The birdhouse was created and donated by local artist Anne Treadwell.

Community members can support the ELANCO Library by purchasing an item from the library's Amazon Charity Wishlist, which help the library to stretch its funds further.
