East Petersburg gears up for summer events

Now that spring has arrived and the cold weather has subsided until next winter, the community is gearing up for its annual roster of activities at East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg.

The first item on the schedule is the 15th annual Vagabonds Car Show, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. A rain date has been set for Sunday, May 5. The free community event will highlight several classic automobiles, and it will include various vendors, food trucks and live entertainment provided by Flamin' Dick and the Hot Rods. Awards will be given out to community-favorite vehicles, and door prizes will be offered throughout the day. Hot dogs will be available to purchase from members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom club.

Every year, the Vagabonds Car Show features a Chinese auction, and all proceeds from the auction will benefit Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster. This year, the event will introduce a station under the park pavilion where attendees may create their own trucker hats.

The car show is organized via a partnership between the Vagabonds and the East Petersburg Events Committee, and it is one of the first annual events held at East Petersburg Community Park each year. Although members of the Vagabonds have hosted an annual show since the club was founded in Landisville in 1958, the event has grown substantially since moving to East Petersburg. "The car show became a great opportunity for the events committee to show people our park, and it draws in a lot of people every year," said Events Committee chairperson Kristin Troop. "We started to add other music events, and things really took off after we built the amphitheater. The car show has been instrumental in our current event lineup."

The Vagabonds' car show will be followed by the Events Committee's annual yard sale and barbecue, which will take place at the park on Saturday, June 1. The yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, and it will feature dozens of vendors from the local community and the surrounding areas. The barbecue will kick off at 11 a.m., giving attendees an opportunity to purchase a meal that will include a half-chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, a dinner roll, a bag of chips, a beverage and a dessert. The Events Committee's food coordinator, Erin Matthews, said the group hopes to develop the event into a larger-scale community gathering by adding live music in the future.

On Friday, June 28, the Events Committee will host a Movie in the Park event that will include live music from Kracker Beez in addition to a fireworks display. The Uptown Band will return to the park for a concert on Saturday, July 13.

"We're excited to offer a variety of events to people outside of the community and to give our residents a variety of concerts," said Troop. "It's a great place to meet your neighbor, connect with the community and showcase what a beautiful park we have in East Pete."
