Downingtown Athletes Win Scholarships

Sweet Jane's Wish (SJW) Foundation has selected Downingtown West High School senior Anthony Florkowski and Downingtown East High School senior Ryan Romano as the winners of the annual SJW scholarship fund. Four students are selected each school year from the tennis and ice hockey teams by the SJW Foundation. Florkowski and Romano join the fall scholarship recipients, Payton Beaver and Kaitlyn Fisher.

SJW Foundation is a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation and honors the memory of Jane Gerlach Booge, who died of breast cancer at age 47. Booge attended Downingtown High School and was a member of the tennis team. Her quiet confidence and positive attitude took her to numerous championship matches, including districts and state competitions. Booge was known for her compassion and friendship to many.

SJW Foundation honors students who share Booge's qualities of determination, optimism and kindness and who have a love of tennis or ice hockey. Florkowski and Romano have shown determination, resilience and a positive attitude while overcoming difficulties in their lives.

Florkowski had a passion for hockey from the time he was young, and he turned it into a lifestyle and a life lesson. Several of his past coaches shared that Florkowski is dedicated to his sport and improving his skills; conducts himself with respect for the game, his teammates, opponents and officials; and always had a positive attitude. Florkowski has also dedicated over 100 hours of his time to Hockey Fights MS, which raises money for research into the cause of multiple sclerosis and its potential treatments or cure.

Romano struggled early with academics. Through years of hard work and dedication, he learned skills and techniques to help him overcome these struggles. Both on the ice and in the classroom, he is committed to working hard and working smart.

Florkowski and Romano join the previous 28 recipients of this $3,500 award. SJW Foundation has awarded over $78,000 in scholarships to Downingtown East and West High School seniors who have participated in the student tennis and ice hockey programs and are furthering their education at a university, college or trade school. SJW Foundation scholarships are funded by an annual golf outing, dinner and auction and by donations.

Due to the success of the annual golf outing and the generosity of supporters, SJW Foundation is also able to support the Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) organization and the Chester County Hospital Foundation, SHiNE, with a yearly donation. SJW Foundation has donated more than $18,000 to support local families experiencing financial crisis due to the additional costs incurred due to breast cancer.

The 10th annual golf outing will take place on Monday, Sept. 13, at the Apple Cross Country Club in Downingtown. For more information, visit http://www.sweetjaneswish.com or search for "Sweet Jane's Wish Foundation" on Facebook.
