Dancing Through the Decades

You're invited to enter a time machine. Relive some of the best musical moments of the past at "Stepping Through Time," E-Dance Center's annual recital. The program will take place at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 7. It will be held in Leffler Chapel on the Elizabethtown College campus, 1 Alpha Drive.

"This year's program invites you on a journey - not just through melodies and rhythms, but through time itself," said Camille Gubbins, owner and artistic and creative director of E-Dance Center. "From the age of dinosaurs to the legends of Greek mythology, from the golden age of swing to the electric energy of the '80s, from the unforgettable hits of the 2000s to music that imagines the future, 'Stepping Through Time' explores the moments, stories and sounds that shape who we are."

The show will spotlight 270 dancers, ranging in age from 3 to 75, who will perform a wide variety of dance, including pointe, ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, Broadway tap and clogging. Fifteen teachers and staff and more than 50 volunteers help to put the show together, Gubbins said.

E-Dance Center began 21 years ago. Initially located above an art studio in Elizabethtown, it moved into its current location on North Hanover Street in 2012. Gubbins, whose oldest daughter began classes in 2014, was offered a teaching position and then became the studio owner and artistic director three years ago.

"We are a noncompetition studio dedicated to developing and teaching dancers in a nourishing environment," Gubbins said, noting that community service is an important component of the dance center. "Our mission is to spread our love of dance and the arts with family, friends and our community. We have participated in parades in Elizabethtown, Harrisburg, Hummelstown and Lancaster. We have danced at community events such as the Strawberry Festival, Elizabethtown Tree Lighting and also National Night Out. We performed for residents at Masonic Homes and other retirement homes. We also serve our community by participating in Toys for Tots, LIV-ETown 2nd Friday events and various Chamber events."

Enrollment for summer classes is underway now, and Gubbins encourages people to come to the recital to learn more about the studio and enjoy a fun day out.

"Music is our time machine. A single song can transport us to a memory, introduce us to a different world or inspire us to dream ahead," she said. "Though styles evolve and centuries pass, music remains a constant thread, connecting generations, telling our stories and guiding us forward. At our recital, we step through time together, honoring where we've been, celebrating where we are and imagining where the music will lead us next."
