Dance Camp Will Bring Out the Irish in Everyone

Dancing is exercise, creative movement, self-expression, an art form and even competition. Irish dancing is a form of dancing ramped up a few notches.

"Dance is all of those things at once," said Esther Pujol, founder and head teacher at Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. "Irish dance is an incredible form of exercise and athletic training, but it is also an art form that allows dancers to express emotion, creativity and personality. Each of our dancers start Irish dance with one of these goals in mind, but after practicing for years, it becomes all of them."

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance will conduct this year's edition of its annual summer camp from 9 a.m. to noon daily during the week of Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike. The camp is open to students between the ages of 5 and 17, from beginners to advanced dancers.

Campers can register for single or multiple days at http://www.palomairishdance.com. There are modest fees associated with registering.

"Irish dance is a traditional form of dance rooted in the Irish culture," said Pujol. "It combines athleticism, musicality, rhythm, precision and artistry. What makes Irish dance unique is its fast footwork, rigid posture and intricate rhythms."

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance's summer camp will be a fun-filled week that builds confidence, teaches new steps and refines technique in a supportive atmosphere. Campers can also expect to learn collaboration, work ethic basics and fundamental social skills.

"The atmosphere of the camp will be upbeat, welcoming, encouraging and fun," said Pujol. "We want campers to feel challenged in a positive way while also feeling supported and included. There will be a balance of hard work, laughter, friendship, creativity and team spirit throughout the week."

The camp is expected to host dancers from all over Lancaster County, as well as surrounding counties such as York, Lebanon, Chester and Dauphin. The Irish Dance summer camp is in its 10th year of existence.

"The participants are passionate young dancers who are eager to learn, improve and connect with others who share similar interests," said Pujol, a resident of Manheim Township. "Some are highly competitive dancers, while others simply dance because they love it."

Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance presents nearly 250 performances each year, many of which are given over the St. Patrick's Day weekend. The school also hosts two Irish dance competitions each year.

The Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance has performed at restaurants, schools, theaters, festivals, fairs, parades and retirement communities. Five years ago, the school established a Celtic band that features musicians from all parts of Lancaster County.
