CV Volleyball Closes Season With District Loss

Following their first-round win over Manheim Township, a 3-0 quarterfinal loss to top seeded Cumberland Valley bumped the Lady Bucks out of the District III playoffs on November 2nd and ended a successful 10-4 season.

Cumberland, who only succumbed to one loss all season, took the contest in straight sets of 25-18, 25-21, 25-11.

After a break between the regular season and their District III tournament opener on Thursday October 28th, the Lady Bucks dished out their own sweep and wasted no time putting away Manheim Township (25-14, 25-15, 25-23).

Eighth seeded CV was hungry for the win over the ninth seeded Blue Streaks. The two teams had split their pair of regular season meetings, but more recently the Bucks had topped Township 3-2 in the final match of the regular season.

CV hardly let Township into the contest in the first two sets of the playoff bout, but the Blue Streaks mounted a bit of a comeback and led the third game by as many as eight points.

"In the third set, we made a few individual offensive and defensive plays that helped us to regain some energy," pointed out head coach Devin Moore. "Then we got back to serving a little more aggressively which helped put us in a better position."

A few well-placed hits powered by Rebecca Hartranft (16 kills), helped sway the momentum back to CV, and the team quickly squelched the Blue Streaks rally.

"We have been doing a better job of communicating and positioning ourselves to help us succeed," concluded Moore.

Summer Getz put up a game-high 29 assists, Emily Kornacki supplied nine digs and Madison Williams paired five blocks with a trio of aces.

The final point of the contest was a flawless ace served up by junior Katelyn Williams.

CROSS COUNTRY

CV applauded the efforts of nine of their cross-country athletes who participated in the District III Championships held at Big Spring High School on October 30th.

"Both squads finished the season on a high note by qualifying nine athletes for the District III meet," praised head coach Mark Amway. "Despite some injuries throughout the season, everyone worked through them and finished the season strong."

In both the girls' and boys' races, the lone senior on each CV team was fittingly the pacesetter for the Buckskins.

Senior Kylynn Frankford had the girls' best time of 22:02.1 to take 121st, and for the boys, the front runner was fellow senior Emmanuel Gitonga placing 115th with his time of 18:13.8.

Also representing the Lady Bucks was Abigail Zook (22:24.5), Seana Dougherty (22:35.1), Bellemarie Alston (23.29), and Kylee Antrim (23:32.3).

In the boys' race, Gitonga was closely followed by his brother, Timothy Gitonga, less than a second behind at 18:14.7. Tyler Slingluff (18:44), and Joseph Castronova (19:15.6) rounded out the CV runners.
