CV Softball Drops A Hearbreaker to Hempfield

Easter break, combined with more wet weather, limited the softball team to just two games over the last week, a 3-2 loss to Hempfield last Wednesday, the 20th and a 10-4 setback to Warwick on the 13th.

The Knights scored lone runs in the first three innings for an early lead. They finished with three hits on the day, two were solo homer runs. CV threatened to pull out the win with two runs in the top of the seventh but fell one run short.

Rhiannon Henry covered all seven innings, and 10 Warwick runs, surrendering eight hits and five walks to go with her eight strikeouts. She also collected three hits at the plate with first and fourth inning singles pushing CV runs across. Becca Hartranft also enjoyed a three-hit game with her second inning single putting CV up 2-0. Alexa Freeburn made it 3-0 with her lone hit of the game, a RBI single in the third.

VOLLEYBALL

The old saying in sports says, 'you can't win them all' and outside of a few rare exceptions, that holds true. Just ask the boys' volleyball team who found themselves on both sides of a 3-0 final, falling to Warwick while topping Manheim Township.

Warwick handed out that 3-0 loss on April 14th by bookending wins of 25-19 around a 25-14 game two win. Kenji Pha finished with 19 assists and Carson Hoover 12 kills in the loss.

CV rebounded on the 19th with that 3-0 win over Township, posting scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-20. Pha led the way with 31 assists, two aces and one block while Hoover chipped in with nine kills.

TRACK

The track and field teams made the trek across Lancaster County to Millersville on April 19th with the Lady Buckskins returning home a 93-53 winner over Penn Manor for their first win of the season. The boy's side suffered a near miss, falling 80-70, putting both squads at 1-2.

The Lady 'Skins did their heavy lifting on the track where they claimed all but one event. Three of those wins came in the relays with Seana Dougherty, Kylee Antrim, Samantha Herr and Kylynn Frankford taking the 3200m relay. Mae Lindor, Alondra Ortiz-Montijo, Isabella Johnson and Hallie Schnapf took the 400m relay and Grace Lapp, Jazlyn Cintron, Brooke Denlinger and Frankford claimed the 1600m relay. Johnson added wins in the 100m and 200m while Denlinger picked up the final sprint win by taking the 400m. Jessica Koenig (100H) and Lapp (300H) combined to sweep the hurdles with Frankford (800m) and Dougherty (3200m) finishing the winning on the track. CV added two wins in the field, one each by Cintron (high jump) and Christiana Uzoije (discus).

The boy's side totaled seven wins with just one coming via relay. Carson Miller, Joey Castronova, Andrew Hoffner and Emmanuel Gitonga handled that win with a 3:38.87 in the 1600m relay. Castronova added a solo win in the 400m while Ben Eberly (110H) and Zachary Phy (300H) combined to sweep the hurdles. CV's remaining three victories came in the field with Zach Stoudt (long jump), Thabo Lautsbaugh (triple jump) and Jordan Sensenig (high jump) handling those wins.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

With roughly half of the regular season in the books, the Lady Buckskins are sitting at 1-7 on the season after losses to Eastern York and Cocalico.

The Lady Golden Knights came to Witmer on April 13th and handed the home team a 12-8 setback. Jamie Handwerger kept things close with 16 saves but it was not enough to overcome a 7-4 halftime hole. Jordyn Hironimus paced the offense with four goals while Annika Bredeman added three goals and one assist. Cassandra Malles picked up the final score.

One day later a trip to Denver resulted in a 17-3 loss to Cocalico. Malles picked up one more score with Caroline Kulp accounting for the remaining two goals. Handwerger finished with nine saves.

BOYS' LACROSSE

The boy's lacrosse team has just two losses on the season, both coming opposite undefeated Lampeter-Strasburg. The second of those losses came on April 13th with L-S posting a 18-5 final for the win. Ben Nolt finished with 15 saves while four Buckskins divided the scoring. Keller Dillman led that quartet with two goals while Hunter Silvaggio, Noah Harrison and Noah Nolt split the remaining three.

As with the first loss to L-S, Conestoga Valley was able to bounce back with a win, this time via a 17-5 final over Ephrata on the 19th. Dillman and Jeff Fisher paced the offense with matching five goal and four assist games. Isaiah Sensenig (3g), Tyson Zwaska (2g) and Silvaggio (2g) cleaned up the remaining goals. CV went with a trio of keepers with both Nolt and Jay Stauffer tallying three saves. Zack Bolton added two of his own.

BASEBALL

The baseball team tripled their loss total over the last week, falling to Warwick and Ephrata by a combined 26-4. The April 13th tilt opposite Warwick went only five innings with the Warriors posting a 10-0 victory. Connor Esbenshade and Kayden Fisher split pitching duties and combined for three strikeouts and five walks and those 10 Warriors runs but just three of them were earned runs as CV committed four errors. Esbenshade's two singles and Preston Fisher's lone single accounted for the Buckskin offense.

One day later, CV dropped another five-inning affair, this one by a 16-4 final to Ephrata. Sam Thompson took the brunt of the damage but just four of the 14 runs scored during his time were earned as another six errors doomed CV. Preston Fisher covered the final out in relief. Thompson used a RBI single in the first to help his own cause but single RBIs from Evan Wilson, Owen Fisher and Evan Lapp were not enough to overcome the Mountaineers.

BOYS' TENNIS

The boy's tennis team continues their back-and-forth season, picking up a win over Lebanon that was offset by losses to Cocalico and Manheim Township. CV just missed pulling out the win over Cocalico on April 14th, falling by a 4-3 final. Jason Schlegelmilch and Henry McQuate-Krahnke picked up singles wins while Grady Ray and Ivan Shrom accounted for the lone doubles victory. The Buckskins were not able to keep their April 19th match with Township as close, with the Blue Streaks posting a 5-0 win.

Conestoga Valley did post a 7-0 win over Lebanon on the 13th. Schlegelmilch and McQuate-Krahnke were two of the singles winners with McQuate-Krahnke joining Yuji Wenger and Schlegelmilch teaming with Nolan Miller to pick up two doubles wins. Miller and Wenger also claimed their solo matches while Ray and Shrom accounted for the final win at number three doubles.
