CV Boys' Lacrosse Moves to 8-3 Overall

League victories over Ephrata and Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic bumped CV's boys' lacrosse record to 8-3 overall.

On April 20th, the Bucks rolled over Ephrata 17-8, dispersing their 17 goals evenly over the four quarters.

CV held a slim 7-6 advantage at the half, but pulled away by netting 10 second half goals, while simultaneously holding Ephrata to just two.

Sophomore Jeffrey Fisher tallied seven CV goals, and brother Zachary Fisher put in four and added one assist. Hunter Silvaggio notched a hat trick, Keller Dillman netted two goals and an impressive five assists, and Tyson Zwaska contributed one of each.

On April 16th, the club traveled to Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic and fought their way back from a 4-3 disadvantage at the half to secure the 9-8 win.

"We were able to make some quick adjustments at halftime which allowed our offense to succeed more in the second half," pointed out head coach Nick DiPiano. "Our whole offense did a good job of understanding that LCSD's defense would make stops, and in order to overcome that, they needed to pick their shots wisely and make their opportunities count."

The final quarter began with the Bucks trailing 8-6, but an offensive surge produced three CV goals, and an impenetrable defense held LCSD scoreless in the final period.

J. Fisher led with six CV goals and Z. Fisher netted the other three, with two assists from Zwaska.

Defensive anchors Conrad Dillman and Michael Burnett led a cohesive and stifling defensive unit, and keeper Benjamin Nolt kept his calm as the last line of defense, gathering nine pivotal saves.

"Our defense is a veteran group and all of them are comfortable being under fire," described DiPiano. "They are fearless and aggressive when they need to be. We had outstanding performances from our entire defense-from midfield all the way down to our goalie."

BASEBALL

Though suffering two setbacks last week, the Bucks continue to battle.

April 21st held a 9-1 loss to Hempfield with CV crossing their lone run in the first inning.

Connor Esbenshade made the most of his first at bat, reaching on an error, stealing his way to second, capitalizing on another error to get to third, and ultimately scoring on Gavin Fisher's groundout.

Hempfield responded with a pair of runs during the subsequent at bat and pulled away with a five-run inning in the third.

The Bucks collected three hits: a triple from Ethan Weaver, a double from Logan Kline, and a single by Josh Pattison.

Fisher was on the mound in the loss and struck out three.

Two days earlier, CV kept things close in a 6-2 loss to Manheim Township, and Weaver had another strong effort at the plate, claiming three of the Bucks' four hits.

Despite trailing from the first inning, CV rallied in the sixth. Fisher opened with a walk and was scored by a double from Weaver. Tucker Hastings propelled Weaver home on another double before Township retired the side.

The girls track meet against Penn Manor on April 19th couldn't have been much closer, tipping 75-74 in favor of the visiting Comets.

Sawyer Shertzer and Dominic Brabant each served a trio of aces. Shertzer slammed 13 kills, supported by Brabant's 25 assists.

Stifling Township retaliation, Kenji Pha provided six digs and a block came from Camden Clapper.

Teaming up to pull in another Buckskin point was duo High and Schlegelmilch who overcame their Township opponents 8-4.

GIRLS' LACROSSE

Hempfield got the best of the Lady Bucks in a 17-3 home field loss on the 21st. The contest was close, 5-2 at the half, but Hempfield went on a second half scoring blitz, netting another 12 goals.

There was no lack of scoring for either side in CV's 18-14 win at Cedar Cliff on the 19th. The Lady Bucks got the early edge, running up a 9-5 lead by the half, and both teams added an additional nine goals to their second half resume.

With each team firing off the same number of shots, 22 apiece, it all came down to goalkeeping, and CV's Handwerger won the day with her eight saves.

Despite getting three hits against Hempfield, two from Payton Stoeckl and one from Kassie Horning, the Buckskins were unable to bring the runners home.

Stoeckl also pitched for CV, picking up two strikeouts in the loss.

On Monday, the team fell to Manheim Township after the Streaks put together a four run second and a five fourth.
