Craft market will feature local artisans, painters

Lampeter United Methodist Church (LUMC), 1101 Village Road, Lancaster, will host an art and craft market on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include a variety of local vendors, a silent auction and food available to purchase. The proceeds of the market will support LUMC's children's ministry and community outreach programs.

Attendees of the market will have an opportunity to peruse items from more than 30 vendors, and each vendor's inventory will comprise exclusively handmade products. Jewelry, Christmas wreaths and decorations, wooden trains, kids' games, dog bowls and herbal products will be among the goods available to purchase during the event. Artist Carol Dale, who has participated in the market as a vendor for several consecutive years, will return this year to sell paintings. Mountville-based craftsman Tom Beaulieu will also join the roster of vendors to sell rustic birdhouses that he creates from scratch.

Each vendor will donate an item for a silent auction during the art and craft market. The silent auction will also feature items from local businesses such as tickets to the Strasburg Rail Road and Sight & Sound Theaters and gift cards for restaurants. Several themed gift baskets will also be able to bid on, including a movie-themed basket of popcorn and candy and a basket of coffee. Every year, the themed gift baskets are assembled by members of the congregation.

Food will be available to purchase from the church cafe during the fair. Members of the congregation will sell soup, hot dogs, barbecue items and baked goods.

The proceeds of the silent auction, food sales and vendor fees will benefit LUMC's various children's programming and community outreach initiatives. In January, the church introduced Kids' Club, a weekly program for children from kindergarten to fifth grade. On Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., children meet at the church to participate in games and Scripture-related activities. In addition to Kids' Club, LUMC also holds an annual fall fest in October and an Easter egg hunt in March to connect with families in the community that have young children.

LUMC's community outreach efforts include supporting individual missionaries abroad and throughout Pennsylvania. The church also supports the HUB's campus cupboard in Millersville, which provides food for local college students who are in need.

This is the eigth year LUMC has organized the art and craft market, and it has continued to grow in size and number of vendors over the years. The annual event was started by Mary Dale, who is a member of the church's missions team, but it was taken over by LUMC member Mary Martz last year. "People enjoy the variety of crafters we have, but they also like getting something handmade and not manufactured somewhere," Martz said. "The market keeps getting bigger, too; every vendor from last year is returning."
