Craft fair to benefit Middletown marching band program

The second annual Middletown Band Booster Association Craft Fair will take place at Middletown Area High School, 1155 N. Union St., Middletown, on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Last year for the inaugural craft show, more than 50 vendors offered items for sale. Organizers anticipate that number will double this year. "We had 58 vendors last year. People are still (registering), but we have 73 confirmed," said Becky Carpenter, president of the association and craft show co-chair. "We had over 500 people attend, which is pretty good for the first year."

She said that not only will this year's event feature additional vendors, but the show will encompass more space inside the high school. Crafters will be located in the school cafeteria and surrounding hallways.

"We did collect feedback from the vendors and the one thing they asked for was bigger spaces, so this year we did accommodate with larger spaces," she stated. "And we are able to open up the entire first floor of the high school, so we can accommodate up to 114 booth spaces."

Items for sale will include skin care products, specialty soaps, handmade candles, quilted and knitted items, dog and cat items, baked goods, seasonal decor, woodworking, jewelry, fused glass and resin home decor.

Food items will also be available for sale. "One of our parents runs our concessions, and so there will be soup, hot dogs and breakfast items," said Carpenter.

The craft fair is not juried; however, crafters must complete an application to participate. Nearly 100% of the vendors will offer handmade items.

Those who attend the show will also have an opportunity to win door prizes featuring craft items donated by the participating vendors.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the purchase of a wrap for the Blue Wave Marching Band's new, larger band trailer that was purchased this past fall using the proceeds from last year's craft fair. "The wrap is needed to put both the Middletown Area School District and Blue Wave Marching Band information on the trailer so that it is visible to the community and showcases our program when we go to football games and band competitions," stated Carpenter.

The proceeds from both ticket sales for the door prizes and concessions will go to the trailer wrap fund.

The Middletown Band Booster Association's mission is to provide financial, logistical and moral support to the band programs of the Middletown Area School District. The association predominantly comprises parents of both middle school and high school students who are band members, which includes marching band, concert band, jazz band, color guard and percussion ensemble. Matthew Landrum is the high school band director and Sam Fisher is the middle school band director.
