Country Fair and Market will feature food and fun

The Country Fair and Market at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church features food and bargains, but it serves another purpose as well.

"It's about community outreach," said Sue Kopp, a member of the Caring Hands and Hearts committee at the church. "It's a way to connect with other people."

The church, located at 713 Church St., Mount Joy, will hold its Country Fair and Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4.

On Friday, from 4 p.m. until sold out, a chicken potpie dinner will be available for eat-in or takeout. It will include chicken potpie, coleslaw, applesauce, a roll and butter and water, coffee or tea.

"The coleslaw is homemade, and it's so good," said Marcia Brooks, another member of the event committee.

A limited number of homemade apple dumplings, both regular and sugar-free, will be available to purchase while supplies last as well.

On Saturday, chicken corn soup, hamburger barbecue, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold. Free hot dogs will be available for children age 10 and under.

The event will also feature a variety of baked goods made by church members. "These are very popular," Brooks said. "You can buy a whole pie or just a slice. A lot of people come for dinner and then pick up something for dessert."

Along with pies, church members will make crisped rice treats and fudge, and a congregant from South Africa will make a milk tart.

Lots of items will be available for purchase at the yard sale portion of the event, including clothing, household items, books, toys and holiday decorations. "We will also have a craft table of all handmade items by members of the congregation and friends of the church," said committee member Kathy Binkley.

The crafters get together regularly throughout the year to make items to sell. "We try to vary what we offer every year," explained committee member Linda Gockley, who noted that the church has been holding the bazaar for decades. This year's crafts will include dryer balls, wreaths, gnomes, T-shirts, key fobs, baby blankets, scrubbies and dishcloths.

Proceeds from the event will benefit projects at the church as well as community organizations, including Rainbow's End Youth Services and Align Life Ministries.

"This is our biggest fundraiser of the year," Brooks noted.

It's always well attended, said Kopp, who added, "People are lined up outside before the doors open. The friendship, fellowship and food we have is all wonderful."

Glossbrenner United Methodist Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., followed by Sunday school for people of all ages at 11:15 a.m. Prior to the service, the FROG Cafe is open for snacks and coffee.
