Cornhole tournament to aid fire department

The Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department (LSVFD) will hold its inaugural cornhole tournament on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. Teams will participate in a double-elimination tournament for both bragging rights and cash prizes. The tournament, held outside the firehouse at 1350 Fulling Mill Road, Middletown, will kick off with sign-in at 9 a.m. and will feature food trucks, a live DJ, and giveaway drawings. Attendees may bring their own beverages.

The tournament will serve as a fundraiser for the fire department, which responds to approximately 600 emergency calls annually in Lower Swatara Township and the surrounding municipalities.

"LSVFD is very lucky for the support we receive through the township, but our fully volunteer organization must raise an additional $150,000 each year to ensure our firefighters have the right equipment and training to safely serve our community," said Bill Leonard, fire department president. "Events like this cornhole tournament go a long way toward meeting our budgetary goals each year."

The registration fee for a team of two includes entry in the tournament with a guarantee of at least two games of cornhole, commemorative T-shirts, and entry in giveaway drawings. Attendees may purchase additional tickets for the drawings as well. To register, visit http://www.lowerswatarafire.com.

"The firehouse is a fixture of our township where neighbors feel comfortable gathering for fun events. What better way to build a sense of community amongst residents than with the backyard game everyone loves to play?" said Jamie Fulmer, the tournament director.
