Concert to benefit church youth group

Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, will host a concert on Friday, March 10, to benefit its youth group's mission trips and programs. The concert will feature The Po' Ramblin' Boys, a bluegrass outfit from Tennessee. Doors to the show will open at 5 p.m., and music will begin at 7 p.m.

Food will be available to purchase before the show and during its intermission in the church's family life center. Concert goers will be able to purchase burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, french fries, chips, beverages and desserts.

The Po' Ramblin' Boys hail from the Great Smoky Mountains. The group has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Bluegrass Album category. The band has also been nominated for awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and performed in venues across the United States and Europe.

This is the first year that Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren will host a concert fundraiser. The church primarily hosts dinners and lunches for members of the congregation, but it decided to begin hosting more events that engage with the surrounding community. "We're trying something different and thinking outside the box to connect with people beyond the church," said Bobbie Davis, organizer for the event. The proceeds for the concert will support two trips that Mechanic Grove's youth groups will take this summer. The church's senior high youth group will travel to Boston on a week long mission trip to assist with repair and maintenance projects in the city and its surrounding area. This is the first year that the youth group will take a mission trip since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and it hopes to continue taking service trips in the years to follow. This summer, the junior high youth group will attend a conference held at Juniata College where other youth groups gather to worship together.

The youth groups meet on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 5 p.m., as well as one Sunday a month for a game or activity. During the Wednesday meetings, which the church calls Roots, students gather in a worship setting to participate in a Bible study. "We're trying to give kids a foundation in the Bible and help them to find their roots in the faith," Davis said. "Having a foundation helps them when they grow up and become stronger adults." Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren also provides a community meal at 5:45 p.m. on the nights Roots is held. The meal is open to the public and provided by donation.
