Church To Present Polar Express Craft Show, Train Display

Honey Brook Presbyterian Church, 4331 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322), Honey Brook, will present its sixth Polar Express event, featuring a train display and craft show, on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The day will also include a continuous showing of the movie "The Polar Express" and the sale of food and beverages, including homemade chicken corn soup. Soup can also be bought by the quart to take home.

The craft show will feature 17 vendors, all of whom hand-make the items they sell. Crafts for sale will include honey, beeswax cosmetics, chocolates, tote bags, purses, wallets, baked goods, inlaid cutting boards, tiles, jewelry, wire sculptures, soy candles, wreaths, note cards, quilted items, pressed flowers, Swedish embroidered hand towels, seasonal items and more.

There will also be a silent auction. The prizes will be items donated by the vendors, as well as gift baskets from church members.

The centerpiece of the event will be the display of trains. The model trains are of various gauges and types, and sets will be constructed of differing materials.

"Congregation members bring in their displays and set them up in our fellowship hall," said Gwen Sweatlock, one of the event organizers. One of the displays is made entirely of Lego blocks, including the railroad track, the railroad cars, the buildings and all of the scenery. "That's always a favorite," Sweatlock noted.

All are invited to watch "The Polar Express." The movie, based on the children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, is about a young boy who embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on Christmas Eve on the Polar Express, while learning about friendship, bravery and the spirit of Christmas.

"It is played on a TV, and there is a lot seating for the kids to enjoy," said Sweatlock. "It's a cozy spot with a few sofas. It's nice for the kids to sit and watch the movie while their parents (shop) or look at the train displays more closely."

The church sanctuary, which will be decorated for the season, will be open throughout the event.

The Sunday worship service at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church is held at 10:30 a.m. Lift-Off, an intergenerational ministry, is held prior to the service from 9 to 10 a.m. It includes a light breakfast, a Bible study, an activity, singing and prayer.

The new group, which is led by pastor Sam Massey and congregation member Peg Dombach, formed in September. "It is an additional gathering that we have," Sweatlock said, noting that about 20 people of all ages attend the group each week. "We recently created fleece blankets for some of our missions." The group also packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.
