Church to host 5K, fun run and Trunk or Treat

Freedom Life Church will present the 10th annual Freedom 5K and fun run followed by a Trunk or Treat on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Salisbury Township Community Park, commonly known as Gap Park, 750 White Horse Road, Gap.

The 5K run will be timed by Pretzel City Sports. Following an awards presentation for the top finishers in various age categories, there will be a fun run that will consist of one lap around the park. Goodie bags and refreshments will be provided for all registrants.

Event organizers note that community members participate in the event, not just those who attend Freedom Life. "There was about 100 (participants) in the 5K last year," said Angie Dearolf, Freedom Life communications director, noting that parents with children in strollers are welcome in both the 5K and the fun run. "Last year, we had the Southern End Strollers come with their little ones, and they walked the course."

"Our first 5K was through the streets of Christiana," Dearolf added, noting that the other family events were added in subsequent years.

A free Kids' Zone will open at 9 a.m. as well. Offered will be bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painting, concessions and more. The Kids' Zone will remain open until 11:30 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m. FL Kids will host a Trunk or Treat for families in the lower parking lot of the park. Children in fifth grade and younger are invited to participate. As part of the Trunk or Treat event, volunteers will decorate the trunks of their vehicles in child-friendly themes and distribute candy to children. Non-scary costumes are encouraged, and admission is free.

Proceeds from the 5K will be used in the fight against human trafficking. Over the past nine years, Freedom Life has been able to give nearly $60,000 to reach, rescue and restore women and children affected by trauma. In the past, contributions have been given to the A21 Campaign, North Star Initiative and, new last year, All Things Possible Ministries, founded by Victor Marx. The faith-based organization works to free people from trauma, including trafficking victims, members of the military with PTSD and widows and orphans in war-torn areas.

"Last year, we learned about All Things Possible and were inspired by what they are doing and the impact they were having," said Dearolf, noting that all proceeds from this year's event will benefit All Things Possible. More information about the organization is available at http://www.victormarx.com.

The premier sponsors for this year's Freedom 5K are Andrews Auto of Gap, Lincoln Way Electric of West Grove, Weaver Companies of East Earl and Bob Dolinger Hauling of Nottingham.
