Church sets Epiphany event

Saint James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster, offers a choral compline service to the community every First Friday. The next event will take place on Jan. 5. It will be a special Epiphany event featuring a dessert reception at 8 p.m.; a performance of brass, organ and percussion music at 8:30 p.m.; and the choral compline service from 9 to 9:30 p.m.

The church's services of compline - meaning completion - are based on the closing time of prayer in the monastic day. The compline service is sung or spoken in monasteries around 9 p.m., when darkness has fallen and bedtime is near.

The services at Saint James feature the Compline Choir under the direction of William Wright. The brass ensemble to perform on Jan. 5 includes more than a dozen brass players from central Pennsylvania along with percussionists and an organist under the direction of Wright. Between brass pieces, parishioner Kim Lemon will share the biblical background of Epiphany.

The event is free and open to the public.
