Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will host a Kickin' BBQ Competition on Sunday, Sept. 22, starting at 4 p.m. The event will also feature special guest speaker Jason Avant, former NFL wide receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The third annual competition will pit local barbecue masters against each other in brisket and pork butt categories, as well as a miscellaneous category, which will include chicken, ribs and prime rib. Attendees will be able to sample the entries from each competitor, and the church will provide sides, drinks and ice cream. Grand prizes and runner-up prizes will be awarded in each category based on the judges' scoring as well as an overall crowd favorite voted on by those attending. In addition to the barbecue sampling and voting, there will be fun activities for children, including a bounce house and barrel train rides from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a candy cannon at 6 p.m. After judging has closed, the barbecue competition winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded at 6:30 p.m.

Following the announcement of the winners, Avant will speak about how he overcame a tough childhood in south-side Chicago and saw his life changed forever when he devoted his life to Jesus before beginning his 10-year NFL career.
