Christmas Tradition

Two-Day Event Planned In The Village

As the holidays approach, the village of Intercourse begins to prepare for the time ahead with tasteful decorations in a variety of colors. Organizers of the 25th annual Intercourse Merchants Holiday Celebration have chosen to resurrect a time-honored tradition that points right to the heart of the season. "We are going back to our roots," said Mike Sensenig. "We will do the Nativity and Shepherds Walk."

The Shepherds Walk, for which local children are invited to dress as shepherds and take part, will begin at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. The walk will proceed from the library to the Old Candle Barn on Old Philadelphia Pike, making a few stops along the way. Live Nativities will be held at the Old Candle Barn at 6 and 6:30 p.m.

Earlier that day, the celebration will kick off with events at the library. At 3 p.m., a one-man performance of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" with Christopher Davis will be presented. "(Davis) was here years ago, and there have been patron requests for him to return," noted library director Catherine O'Sullivan. The performance will be followed by refreshments by donation at 4 p.m. and a tree lighting at 5 p.m. The Caroleers, Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) students in period dress from Dickens' day, will lead a sing-along during the tree lighting.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, Santa will visit with children on the porch of the Jam & Relish Kitchen at Kitchen Kettle Village, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. An Intercourse Fire Company truck will bring Santa to several area locations for photo opportunities, including the Old Candle Barn from 1 to 1:45 p.m., E & A Candies and the Village Cafe from 1:45 to 2:15 p.m., and Smucker Village from 2:15 to 3 p.m.

Other Dec. 3 activities, which will take place at Kitchen Kettle Village, will include s'more making for a nominal fee at MOMS Pretzels and the Harvest Cafe from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Candy-making demonstrations will take place throughout the day at Pepper Lane Fudge and Sweets.

Musical entertainment at Kitchen Kettle Village will feature a variety of genres. Trilogy Brass will play from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The One-Man-Band will solo from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. PVHS Chamber Singers and carolers will perform from 1 to 3 p.m.

These are just a few of the many specials and events to be featured in the village of Intercourse on Dec. 2 and 3. Many merchants will host open houses during the weekend, as well. For more information, readers may visit http://www.villageofintercourse.com/events.
