Chautauqua plans programs

The Pennsylvania Chautauqua, located in Mount Gretna, will host programs that are open to the public and funded entirely by donation. For details and to register, call the Visitor's Center at 717-964-1830 or email pachautauqua@gmail.com.

Special events will include the Mount Gretna Dog Parade on Saturday, June 17, at 9 a.m., with interested individuals meeting at Soldiers Field; the sixth annual Photo Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, July 1, to Monday, July 31, at 9 a.m., with clue sheets available at the Visitor's Center; the Keystone Rehrersburg Band presenting the annual Independence Day concert on Tuesday, July 4, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Gretna Playhouse; Grand Illumination and S'mores in the Park on July 4 at 8:30 p.m. at the tennis courts; History on the Porch on Saturdays, June 17, July 22, and Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society; Poetry, Meditation, and Conversation on Tuesdays, June 13, July 11, and Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Hall of Philosophy; the Mount Gretna Tour of Homes on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets available at http://www.gretnamusic.org; and the Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19 and 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with details available at http://www.mtgretnaarts.com.

Art and Nature, for children ages 6 to 12, will be offered at 10 a.m. on Mondays, June 12, June 19, and July 3. There is a fee. Registration is required.

Other programs for children and families will include Fairy Tale Morning and Ice Cream Breakfast on Saturday, June 24, at 9:30 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy; the Fourth of July Bike Parade on July 4 at 10 a.m. at the Hall of Philosophy; Yoga for Kids on Thursdays in July at 10 a.m. at Stacey's Place Gazebo for children in first grade; and Sidewalk Chalk Art on Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Mount Gretna Library.

Crafts and Cuisine programs will be available at the Hall of Philosophy, and registration is required. These programs will be Worldwide Knit in Public Day on Saturday, June 10, at 10 a.m. on the porch; Zentangle Art on Monday, June 19, at 6 p.m., with a fee and registration due by June 12; Glass Fusion Jewelry on Tuesday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m., with a fee and registration required by Wednesday, July 12; and Magic of Spice on Tuesday, July 25, at 6 p.m., with a fee and registration due by Thursday, July 20.

Potpourri in the Hall of Philosophy will include The Evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility on Thursday, June 8, at 10 a.m.; a Nature Walk on June 10 at 9:30 a.m., beginning at the tennis courts; The Do's and Don'ts of Being a Grandparent: A Pediatrician's Point of View on Thursday, June 22, at 10 a.m.; Two Centuries of Vaccines on Friday, June 23, at 7 p.m.; Land Conservation and Water Quality on Thursday, June 29, at 7 p.m.; The American Presidency and the Chautauqua on Friday, June 30, at 7 p.m.; Mount Gretna Architecture on July 1 at 10 a.m. at the Visitor's Center; The Search for the Endemic Birds of the Hawaiian Islands on Thursday, July 13, at 7 p.m.; a History Walk in Mount Gretna Heights on Saturday, July 15, at 11 a.m., with participants meeting at the firehouse parking lot; Michael Cantor: Professional Illusionist on Friday, July 28, at 7 p.m.; and Union Canal on Friday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m.

Poetry and Literature in the Hall of Philosophy will explore The Writer's Craft with Julie Wray Herman on Thursday, June 15, at 10 a.m. and original plays by members of the Playwrights Alliance of Pennsylvania on Friday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m.

A series about poetry will be presented by Jesse Waters from Elizabethtown College on Fridays at 10 a.m. The program will explore William Carlos Williams' "Red Wheelbarrow" and Gwendolyn Brooks' "We Real Cool" on June 16; T.S. Eliot's "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" on June 23; Wallace Stevens' "The Emperor of Ice Cream" and "The Snow Man" on June 30; Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" and "Acquainted With the Night" on July 14; Rita Dove's "Black on a Saturday Night" and "American Smooth" on July 21; and Jericho Brown's "Ganymede" and "White Lilies" on July 28.

Lebanon Valley College Book Reviews will be presented on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy. The selections will be "Reality+: Virtual Worlds and the Problems of Philosophy" by David J. Chalmers on June 13; "How the South Won the Civil War" by Heather Cox on June 20; "Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law" by Mary Roach on June 27; "Cat's Cradle" and "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut on July 11; "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams on July 18; "The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I" by Lindsey Fitzharris on July 25; "The Awakened Brain" by Lisa Miller on Aug. 1; and "I Never Thought of It That Way" by Monica Guzmán on Aug. 8.

A variety of music programs will be offered. Organ recitals will be presented at Mount Gretna United Methodist Church (UMC) at 7 p.m. on select Wednesdays. The performers will be Emily Amos on June 14, Aaron Patterson on June 21, and Daniel Ficarri on June 28. A donation is requested.

Other music programs will include The Mysterious Triangle by Alison Meekel, soprano, and Debra Ronning, pianist, on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Gretna Playhouse; Build an Organ on June 19 at 1 p.m. at Mount Gretna UMC; a free Drum Circle for Kids on Monday, June 26, at 10 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy; Mr. Music: Family Sing-Alongs on Mondays, July 17, July 31, and Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy; and Hello Cello! on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. in the Hall of Philosophy.

Recreation programs are planned, as well. Mah Jongg will be played at the Hall of Philosophy at 1 p.m. on Mondays through Oct. 2. People at any level of play are welcome.
