Cemetery Tours Planned At Prospect Hill

The Historic Prospect Hill Cemetery Heritage Foundation is again offering Historic Prospect Hill Sunday Tours at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 700 N. George St., York. Tours will begin at noon and 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 11, Aug. 15, Sept. 19, and Oct. 17.

After a brief hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tours will return for their fourth year at Prospect Hill. Nearly 1,000 people have participated.

Aboard the wheelchair-accessible History Tram, up to 22 guests at a time will take a 90-minute ride through the cemetery to learn about history and visit various points of interest. Chartered in 1849, Prospect Hill is the final resting place of men and women from the 19th and 20th centuries who created the industrial and social fabric of York County. Additionally, soldiers from every war in which the U.S. has participated are interred at Prospect Hill, including the 162 people in Soldiers' Circle. Some of those buried in Soldiers' Circle, a federally owned site given to America after the Civil War, died of wounds from the Battle of Gettysburg. Tour-goers will also learn about Victorian-era architecture and symbolism, visit first responders' graves, and see the Community Mausoleum, which features two handcrafted sphinxes.

Light refreshments will be available one half-hour before each tour. Although this is an outdoor event, organizers recommend that attendees wear a mask, even if they have been vaccinated, as there is no opportunity for social distancing once passengers have boarded the History Tram.

Admission is free, but early registration is recommended as space typically fills quickly. Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available. To make reservations for one of the aforementioned Sunday Tours or to book a private tour for a group of 15 or more people, visit http://www.prospecthill.org/historic-tours.
