Caernarvon Historical Society To Host Churchtown Day

Churchtown Day, featuring community-wide yard sales and specialty foods prepared at Caernarvon Fire Company, will be presented by the Caernarvon Historical Society on Saturday, Aug. 7.

"We've had it for years on the first Saturday in August, but because of the coronavirus we had to cancel last year, but we're back," said society president Yvonne Styer. "It's a big event for people to come out and find bargains. They can spend all morning going up and down the road." She noted that yard sales will extend along Route 23 into neighboring communities as well.

Beginning at 6 a.m., the Caernarvon Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will offer a grab-and-go breakfast, featuring egg sandwiches, coffee and juice. Beginning at 9 a.m., the fire company will offer a carryout lunch. The meal will include a barbecued pulled pork sandwich, pickle, applesauce, cookies, chips and a beverage. Pulled pork will also by sold by the quart. The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon.

Caernarvon Historical Society will host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. Historical society members will also sell items outside their organization's building.

"(We provide) a 12-foot-wide plot; (vendors) bring their own tables and they are responsible for (cleaning up) any debris or items they didn't sell," explained Styer, noting that vendors who park their vehicles at their yard sale spaces will set up where the school was. "We don't specify the depth of the space. We figure all total we can average 30 spaces."

Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society's renovation project at its headquarters, which includes the addition of a restroom, a ramp to provide handicapped accessibility and an archive room. "In the archive room, we will (store items) that have been donated to us," Styer noted. "We do a display inside our building. Periodically, we change it. Now, we will have a place to put things that are not on display at the time."

"We have been working on (the project) for two years," she added. "We are hoping it is finished by the 7th." An open house to formally unveil the completion of the project will take place in September.

The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was first established in 1975 and is located in the former Caernarvon Presbyterian Church, which was restored in 1979. The building includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the society hosts a Memorial Day celebration and frequently presents history programs with local guest speakers.
