Books for a Bargain

Pick up your next read or discover a new favorite author when the Friends of the Manheim Community Library host their Fall Book Sale. The sale will be held at the Kreider Farms Cultural Center at Hoffer Farm, 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from Wednesday, Oct. 28, through Saturday, Oct. 31. A Friends-only preview sale will be held on Oct. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. The book sale will be open to the public on Oct. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. as well as on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29 and 30, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We have thousands of hardcover and paperback books suitable for all ages. Many are by New York Times best-selling authors and award-winning children's works," said Kelly Barthold, book sale chair. "We have many genres: nonfiction, history, biography/memoirs, sports, religion, devotionals, animals, travel, romance, the arts, gardening, crafts, special interests, local books and vintage books. We also have cookbooks for 50 cents."

Along with books, the sale will include DVDs and CDs, as well as audiobooks.

"This year we will have a special table for Halloween books," Barthold said. "We also have a large collection of puzzles."

She encourages people to visit the sale to pick up books for a bargain.

"Our Fall Book Sale is an excellent time to come out and find inexpensive books for your winter reading," she said. "We have many books, and, unlike many book sales, our hardback and paperback books are in alphabetic order according to author."

On Saturday, people may fill a bag for one price, with additional bags for an even lower price.

"What a wonderful way to purchase books and support the Manheim Community Library," Barthold said. "The funds we raise are earmarked for enhancing programs such as Summer Reading and expanding the outreach of the library."

She especially encouraged families to come to the book sale, noting a special incentive for children.

"During Trunk or Treat on Thursday, Oct. 29, at the library, children will be able to get a coupon worth one dollar to use at the book sale," she said.

The Friends of the Manheim Community Library will accept materials to add to the sale on Oct. 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"Donations appreciated are children and teen books, hardcover fiction and nonfiction, paperbacks, travel books - copyright within five years," Barthold said. "Please reevaluate your donations if they are moldy, dirty or water damaged, have missing pages or excessive highlighting or markings. Ask yourself, 'Would I give this to a friend?'"

A table marked "Book Drop Off" will be set up at the cultural center for donations. The Friends do not accept dictionaries, thesauruses, encyclopedias or magazines.
