Blue Rock Heritage Center Posts Open House

The Blue Rock Heritage Center, 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, will host its annual open house on Sunday, June 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event's theme is "Local Railroading." At 2 p.m., local resident and railroad historian Brian Abramo will present on the railroad lines that run through Washington Boro, including the role of today's freight trains, what they carry, and where they go. Washington Boro once had its own passenger station and freight yard, as well as rail sidings for Wertz's and Shultz's coal yards. Attendees may bring local railroad photos or artifacts to the program.

A representative of the local chapter of the Society of Pennsylvania Archaeology will share updates on the current excavation of the historic stone Witmer home, which was located across the stream from the Heritage Center. The presenter will also showcase the archaeology lab in the basement of the Heritage Center. Anyone who has Native American artifacts may bring them along for identification.

Circle Legacy, a local Native American organization, will share crafts and explain the way of life of the Native Americans who once inhabited the area.

In addition, a new duck display will be open in the basement of the Witmer barn. The display includes two rollover boats once used by local duck hunters to sneak up on unsuspecting ducks. A traditional duck hunting sneak boat will also be on display, along with numerous decoys and mounted ducks and geese.

Admission is free, and guests are asked to use the parking lot at the Blue Rock river access point.
