Birdsboro To Host Street Fair, Duck Derby

The Birdsboro Street Fair and Duck Derby will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Main Bird Park, 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro.

Throughout the day, there will be entertainment, music, children's activities, crafts for sale, displays by local groups and businesses and various food trucks, including the Nacho Depot. "It is a great way to support small businesses and community organizations. There will be over 30 stands set up in the park," said Lisa Kraljevich, fundraising chair for Boone Area Library, which is presenting the event.

There will also be new activities, including an appearance by a unicorn from Lisa's Bee Farm. "We have added more activities for the children this year. Children can spend time in a giant bounce castle, plant a flower for Mom and enjoy many other carnival-like games," said Kraljevich. "There will also be rides and pictures with Moonlight Prince, a unicorn, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for a small fee."

The day will culminate with a Duck Derby at 4 p.m., when people will line the banks of the Hay Creek to watch hundreds of rubber ducks "race" toward the finish line.

Kraljevich explained that each duck ticket that is sold has a number that corresponds to a duck that will be placed in the water for the race. The rubber ducks will be dropped into Hay Creek under the bridge at First and Water streets by Birdsboro municipal workers. As the ducks float toward the finish line, the workers will follow behind in their hip waders to free any ducks that get stuck along the way.

The first 11 ducks to cross the finish line and the very last duck to cross the finish line will be the winners. Cash prizes will be awarded to the "sponsors" of the 12 winning ducks. Local businesses, including Doyle Strong Foundation, J.P. Mascaro & Sons and Bachman's Roofing, Building and Remodeling Inc., have donated the prize money for the winners.

Proceeds from the Duck Derby will benefit the Boone Area Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, during its hours of operation: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 8 p.m.; and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A fee charged will be charged per duck, or people may purchase a Quack Pack of five tickets.

Duck tickets are also available at the following Birdsboro businesses: Kathy's Beauty Salon, 713 E. Main St.; Magnolia Dreams Mercantile on Main, 345 W. Main St.; and Happy Hands Consignment Shop, 347 W. Main St.

"Tickets will also be available in the park the day of the event until they sell out. Last year, tickets sold out well before the start of the race," Kraljevich added.
