Bird Club sets meeting, field trips

The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor's Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Patti Barber, an endangered bird specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will present "Current Conservation Concerns of American Goshawk in PA."

The American goshawk was recently recognized and formally listed in Pennsylvania as endangered. Barber will briefly share the history of the goshawk population in Pennsylvania and possible reasons for its decline. She will describe current monitoring efforts, successes, challenges, and failures, including the Game Commission's efforts to test suspected causes contributing to the decline. Identifying these causes is the first step in planning a recovery.

Barber has studied birds on four continents. She did her master's research on mate guarding and paternity in red-faced warblers. At the Pennsylvania Game Commission, she is responsible for the 20 threatened and endangered native birds in the state.
