Bike Month activities posted

Bike Harrisburg has announced a variety of activities planned to celebrated Bike Month, May.

Cyclists are invited to play bike bingo for the chance to win a prize. Bingo cards are available at https://rbhburg.org/2024/04/18/may-2024-bike-bingo-events/.

Several events will celebrate commuting by bicycle. People are reminded that SusqueCycle Bike Share is available to use; visit http://www.susquecycle.org to learn more.

Bike to Work Week is Monday to Sunday, May 13 to 19, and those who log their green commute at https://commutepa.org/bikeandwalk/ will be eligible to win prizes.

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 17. Special badges will be available at Third and North streets in Harrisburg from 7 to 9 a.m., and Roxy's Cafe will offer a complimentary beverage to all riders.

A Bike Commuter Workshop will take place on May 17 at 7 p.m. at the Broad Street Market, offering information about routes for biking to work or other places.

A variety of bike rides will be part of Bike Month.

An HBC Sunday Morning Sociable Ride will be held every Sunday at 7:15 a.m. Participants will meet on City Island in the parking lot near the Walnut Street Bridge for a casual 8 to 10 mph ride. An optional breakfast will follow at Roxy's Cafe, 2774 North St., Harrisburg.

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club (HBC) will offer Friday lunch rides at 10 a.m. Starting at Five Bridges Health and Fitness, 4450 Oakhurst Blvd., Harrisburg, people will ride 30 to 40 miles at a pace of 12 to 13 mph. For more details, visit http://www.harrisburgbicycleclub.org.

Harrisburg Bike Crew casual social rides will be offered. Rides will begin at the Broad Street Market on Wednesday, May 15, at 5 p.m. and Friday, May 24, at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Jonathan Dunk at jmdunk@gmail.com or search for "HBG Bike Crew" on Facebook or Instagram.

Several events will focus on bike safety or bike maintenance.

The Ghost Bikes will be on display on May 15. One white bike will be placed on the Capitol steps for each rider who died while biking in Pennsylvania during the preceding year.

The International Ride of Silence will occur on May 15. Riders may meet at 6:30 p.m. for photos and a brief ceremony at the USMC parking lot, 2995 Green St., Harrisburg, and the slow, silent ride will start at 7 p.m. Cyclists may also start at Camp Hill Borough Hall, 2145 Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. and meet up with the other riders at the Capitol. The ride will memorialize the cyclists who were injured or killed on Pennsylvania roadways.

Bicycle Fix-It at the Broad Street Market will occur on May 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. during 3rd in the Burg. Recycle Bicycle will provide free bicycle repairs while teaching applied physics and the importance of further education for youths. The event aims to promote bicycle safety and more bicycle infrastructure.

Bike Day at the Broad Street Market will be Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Recycle Bicycle volunteers will be at the market to answer questions and perform free bike repairs.

Also in May, free valet bike parking will be available at the Harrisburg Artsfest from Saturday to Monday, May 25 to 27, at Riverfront Park. Valet parking will be set up at Front and Forster streets and Front and Walnut streets, courtesy of Recycle Bicycle.
