Bear Creek students shine at K'nex Challenge Competition

Two teams of gifted education students from the Bear Creek School recently took part in the 2024 K'nex Challenge Competition hosted by the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13. This year's challenge tasked participating teams with designing robots or high-tech equipment aimed at aiding Pennsylvania farmers in their agricultural endeavors.

Following weeks of effort, innovation and collaboration, the two teams showcased their talents, earning accolades for their ingenuity. The teams, comprised of fourth- and fifth-grade students, impressed the judges with their inventive solutions. The standout performers representing the Bear Creek School were The Mantis Machines and the AV Prods.

The Mantis Machines team claimed the Fan Favorite/Popularity Award for its Mantis Machine robot. Team members include Nora Poterjoy, Emilie Leilous, Rylen Clugston and Jack Messick.

Additionally, the AV Prods team clinched second place out of the 13 participating teams with its groundbreaking agrivoltaics design. The team members - Ben Behan, Luke McNaughton, Cole Roberts and Brooks Groff - impressed judges with their commitment to addressing the needs of Pennsylvania farmers.

The 2024 Challenge centered on the significance of high-tech farming in bolstering Pennsylvania's agricultural sector, which contributes $132.5 billion to the state's economy annually and supports more than 593,600 jobs. With the population on the rise and food demand escalating, the integration of innovative technologies such as agricultural robots becomes increasingly crucial.

The competition's rules required teams of two to four students to utilize K'nex, incorporating at least one motor, to create prototypes. Each team was tasked with submitting a comprehensive design notebook, blueprint and delivering a brief presentation detailing its model and its relevance to the challenge.

Judging criteria encompassed creativity, teamwork, challenge success, design and presentation.
