Baron Stage Will Present "Mary Poppins"

She's practically perfect in every way, and she's coming to the stage at Manheim Central High School. Baron Stage will present "Mary Poppins," available for online viewing from Saturday, April 17, through Sunday, May 2.

Based on the book by P.L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, "Mary Poppins" follows the story of the Banks children and their unique nanny.

"It's a really fun show, and there's a lot of magic in it," said Maddie Kreider, a junior who portrays the title character. "We're experimenting with a lot of onstage magic, and that's really helping to bring the story to life."

Kreider described the show as full of love. "It's really a story about the love between the members of a family," she said. "That love just needs some rekindling with the help of a nanny."

The show features a cast and crew of about 50 students, along with 18 students in the pit orchestra, said director Amber Friel. It is being filmed by students in the video production class, who also filmed the school's fall production, "Robin Hood."

Performing a recorded show offers its own unique challenges, Friel noted. "It's really a totally new ballgame from how I'd approach a traditional live performance," she said. "It requires a different type of planning. There's a lot more we can do to make it look really cool, but you can also see any flaws in our design or decorating. ... I'm spending more time thinking about how the students are using their faces and how they are looking during closeups."

Kreider added that being a performer in a recorded show requires a shift in onstage mindset. "One of the biggest differences as an actor is, we don't have a live audience," she said. "We get a lot of our onstage energy from the audience, so we have to find ways to stay engaged with our audience even though they aren't really here."

She noted that there are positives to be found with having to present a recorded show. "It's nice because people who are not local, who are out of state even, can watch us perform and see the show, and they wouldn't normally be able to do that," she said.

Along with Kreider, featured performers in the show are Zeke Ruffner as Bert, Eve Sheaffer as Winifred Banks, Maddie LaFrance as Jane Banks, Zoe Faulkner as Michael Banks and Paul Hurst as George Banks.
