Barbecue fundraiser will support Haitian communities

Haitians Helping Haitians for Christ (HHH) will host its sixth annual chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 11. The fundraiser will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meal tickets are available to prepurchase online at https://tinyurl.com/HHHbbq, and meals purchased in advance must be picked up by 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

Purchased meals will include a quarter-chicken, a roll with butter, applesauce, chips, a whoopie pie and a beverage. Quarter-chickens will also be available to purchase individually at a discounted price.

All proceeds from the chicken barbecue will benefit HHH and its many initiatives to meet the needs of Haitian communities. The organization's programs provide weekly meals for children, educational programs for kids and adults and support for parents who lack the funds to provide for their children. By assisting parents through its programs, HHH enables many children to remain with their families instead of being sent to an orphanage.

HHH was founded in 2018 by Betty Estime and her husband, Elage. Elage grew up in Haiti, and the couple met when Betty took a mission trip to the country in 2010. Elage was working for Mission Possible, a nonprofit organization that had sponsored him as a child. Betty and Elage married in 2012, and they have continued to serve Haitian communities while based in the United States when traveling conditions have grown too dangerous. "Even though we have to be stateside, we're still able to fund our people within the country," Betty said. "Most ministries have been unable to continue their work, as North Americans are currently unable to be there. Over the last year, we have continued to distribute food as well, which is still huge area of need there."

Three years ago, HHH erected a community center in Haiti to host classes on various trades, leadership skills and activities for youths. The community center offers an annual summer camp for local children, as well as music classes and afterschool programs.

"The people on the ground are not responsible for the violence, but they are the ones suffering. (The fundraiser) is one way people can extend their help to a community that is essentially cut off from additional resources," Betty said. "We're helping people at the grassroots level."
