Audubon Society plans programs

Quittapahilla Audubon Society will offer several activities to the public. The organization's programs and field trips are suitable for people of all ages and have no required registration or fee. More information and updates are available at http://www.qasaudubon.org.

A program called "Birds and Wildlife of Chile" will be presented by Mike Slater on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 723 Lehman St., Lebanon. Attendees should enter the church from the parking lot that is located behind the church off Spruce Street.

Mike and his wife, Jan, traveled with a small group of friends to Chile in November 2019. In a variety of habitats, they saw seedsnipe, Sierra finches, Hudsonian godwits, Baird's sandpipers, flightless steamer ducks, kelp geese, condors, Southern giant petrels and king penguins, along with a variety of mammals and plants.

Mike has a lifelong interest in natural history. He received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Allegheny College in Meadville in 1976 and went to work in the field of environmental education. His interest in both native plants and insects has led him to focus on pollination, especially regarding native bees. This interest in pollinators also resulted in a multi-year project collecting, identifying and documenting native and introduced bees at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Mike is active in and has served as president of the Entomological Society of Pennsylvania, the Muhlenberg Botanic Society of Lancaster PA and the Baird Ornithological Club in Berks County. Mike and Jan have helped with seed collecting and meadow planting in a number of public places, and their own 1-acre property is well stocked with native meadow and woodland flowers.

A birding field trip will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at State Game Lands 145. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the trailhead parking lot of the Colebrook Lebanon Valley Rail Trail. For more details, call the event leader, Jim Fiorentino, at 717-269-0675.

The Quittapahilla Audubon Society is holding its 45th annual wild bird seed sale. To place orders by Saturday, Oct. 21, visit the aforementioned website. Bird seed may be picked up at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4.
