At Zion Lutheran, "Daniel" will inspire reminders about faith

We live what we believe. Sometimes our faith needs a recharging, a little boost, a refreshing.

Bible stories like the Sight & Sound production of "Daniel" can provide that kind of reboot.

"Whether we realize it or not, our faith is kind of tested daily," said Kurt Brown, who's been an office administrator at Zion Lutheran Church for two years. "Stuff just comes up in our life. We question why, and then a few months later it becomes evident. We all have our lions' dens; we're brought into them. We can back out or rely on a higher power and grow from there. But faith is ultimately rewarded."

Located at 18 Quarry Road, Leola, Zion Lutheran Church will present a video recording of a Sight & Sound Theatres performance of "Daniel" at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. The video will be shown on a large screen within the church's sanctuary.

"It's similar to many stories of faith in the Bible," said Brown. "It's a testing of faith. Daniel is given the gift of prophecy with dreams and gets thrown into a den of lions."

"This was a person God entrusted to carry out a particular mission," Brown added. "He made sure the mission was carried out and that Daniel was protected. There's a message that if God wants Daniel to do something, He's going to protect Daniel. Like Daniel, we go through things, we go through trials, and we've got to maintain that faith."

Zion Lutheran's presentation of "Daniel" is free to attend, and modest free refreshments will be served. The video recording takes just under two hours to view.

"This is about bringing people together," said Brown. "It's a couple of hours when kids won't be on social media. It's family time. You're with other people in the community. It'll be nice to see people."

The showing of "Daniel" was made possible through the efforts of the church's evangelism committee, which is headed by Pat Kohler and Keith Shetter. More than 100 individuals, a mixture of church members, local families and other community members, are expected to attend.

"It's going to be like the feeling of a Saturday matinee," said Brown. "It's a good vibe. We might have two or three songs on the organ to make it a little bit of a fun atmosphere."

Last spring, Zion Lutheran Church held a similar presentation of another Sight & Sound Theatres production, "Moses," as an outreach program.

"It's community outreach," said Brown. "We like doing things several times throughout the year to engage the public."

"Families can certainly take advantage of it," Brown continued. "For something in spring on the weekend after Easter, it's probably open for people. ( 'Daniel' is) a great story, a great message. We want to be relevant to the community."

Zion Lutheran also hosts community outreach events like a water slide day in August and a Christmas craft show in early December. In addition, the church serves a free community meal on the third Friday of every month.

"We gather to grow; we live to serve," said Brown. "The people here are so nice and welcoming."

A member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Zion Lutheran Leola was founded in 1858. Currently, the church counts 250 active members among its worshipers.
