As Trevor Evans goes, so go the Warriors
Trevor Evans thoroughly enjoys playing the position of quarterback. He likes helping his team even more.
A senior on the Warwick football team, Evans is back to playing his natural position again after trying other roles. High school football teams typically put their most athletic players at quarterback because they give the team its best opportunity to win.
"I'm happy about my season," said Evans. "I've done the most I can with this team. I had to adapt to a lot of changes, and I'm just getting used to the changes now. I did it for the team. The team needed it."
"He's willing to do his best for the football team," said Warwick head coach Bob Locker of Evans. "His goal is to be the best quarterback he can be and also to be the best person he could be. Here's a kid who puts 'we' above 'me.' This is someone I'd like to have on my football team."
Evans grew up playing quarterback, from his early days in midget football to junior high and even into the beginning of his high school career. But as a sophomore, Evans found himself behind star quarterback Jack Reed, who graduated last year.
Evans responded by becoming a wide receiver and an all-Lancaster-Lebanon League safety. And when Locker turned to him this past offseason, Evans answered the call.
"At the end of the season, we looked around and didn't have a quarterback in the pipeline," said Locker. "(Evans) is an excellent athlete. He's embraced what we've asked him to do. He handled it quite well. He's one of our captains. He's a tremendous leader."
"Going into my sophomore year, I knew Jack was pretty good," said Evans. "I just accepted that. I was willing to play receiver for Coach Locker, but he said he needed me to back up Jack (as well). I accepted that role."
Despite "working as hard as I ever have to get ready" in the offseason, Evans has faced some challenges.
After opening their season with a 17-14 upset victory over highly regarded Cocalico, the Warriors stood at 2-6 overall and 2-3 in Section Two of the L-L as of Oct. 13. Through his first eight games, Evans had 11 touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns, but he also threw 12 interceptions.
"I feel like I can do whatever it takes to win," said Evans. "I'm coachable. You can teach me any position, and I'll learn it. I'm a straight-up athlete. I like to take charge on the field. I think a lot of players look to me to make the calls. It's huge to have chemistry with a lot of your players."
"He's a very good athlete. That's why he's there," said Locker. "He runs well, and he can throw. He was our best option; there were no decisions. We knew if it wasn't perfect that Trevor was going to go at it. He gave us the best chance to be successful."
Evans said he'd like to play football in college at the Division II or III level at safety, not quarterback.
"He's a good student," said Locker. "He's a very polite young man. He's very optimistic. He never loses sight of his desire to succeed. He's just a real fine young man."
