Applications open for Master Gardeners program

For those interested in becoming a Master Gardner, the Penn State Master Gardeners of Dauphin County are now accepting applications for basic training starting in October. Applicants are asked to apply at http://www.extension.psu.edu/programs/master-gardener/counties/dauphin before Friday, May 31.

Applicants will be asked to take part in an interview in June or July. Offers will be made in August. A candidate's acceptance with the training fee and forms will be due in September before the course begins in October.

The 2.5-hour weekly basic training certification course will be held on Thursday evenings from October through March, except for holiday weeks in November and December.

Master Gardener certification requirements are to complete the basic training course, score 80% or higher on a midterm and final exam, complete a new class presentation on a topic of choice and record 50 volunteer hours within the first program year. In subsequent years, 20 hours of volunteer time and 10 hours of continuing education are required for Master Gardeners to keep their certification.
