American Legion to present barbecue, live music

Col. Jacob Morgan American Legion Post 537, located at 4499 N. Twin Valley Road, Morgantown, will present a pork barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 11 a.m. until sold out. In addition, the band Shaken will play from 1 to 5 p.m. in the pavilion. Attendees should bring folding chairs or blankets for seating.

The pork barbecue, which is being held in lieu of the post's annual chicken barbecue and clam bake, will be prepared on-site. Attendees may choose from a variety of side dishes such as corn, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. Soda and water will also be available.

"There will be a big group from the post who will get there early, and they will smoke the pork," explained auxiliary vice president Nicole Hallen. "The auxiliary will get together the night before and prepare the sides."

Meals will be available to eat on-site or for takeout.

The American Legion is a social and veterans' service organization. Anyone who has served in the military is eligible to join. There is also a ladies' auxiliary and a Sons of the American Legion chapter, which are open to anyone over the age of 18 who is an immediate family member of an American Legion member or a deceased veteran. The post also includes the American Legion Riders, who are motorcycle enthusiasts.

"The Legionnaires have served in the military. Then you have the auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion. You need to provide a DD214 or some documentation that proves that you are related to someone in the military," explained Hallen. "Social memberships are also offered. With that, you would have to have two people in the post as sponsors."

Those interested in membership may stop by the post to complete an application. Information about joining the organization will also be available at the event on Aug. 19.

"We are always looking for new members and volunteers, especially Legionnaires," Hallen added, noting that the membership includes veterans from the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Post members take part in various community service projects and hold fundraising events, such as an annual golf outing. The Legion Riders hold a bike show each June.

Last May, the American Legion installed a Little Free Library, which invites people to "take a book or share a book."

The post also hosts events that are open to the public, including bingo, trivia nights and karaoke, and seasonal family events, such as a Halloween party. "We have fun," Hallen said. "We are like a family."
