American Legion Riders set Bike Night

The American Legion Riders will host "Bike Night," a fundraising and recruitment event, on Wednesday, June 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Annamarie's on Main, 339 W. Main St., Birdsboro.

Featured at the first-time event will be a display of motorcycles by members of the Riders group. Motorcycle owners from the community are also welcome to participate. "It's open to anyone, and there will be a car show, too," said Riders director Doug Moore, noting there will be no registration fee to show a vehicle.

Attendees will also be able to meet officers of the organization and learn about the Riders and their efforts to help local veterans. "We're trying to get a Riders family together. It's about camaraderie," Moore said.

A portion of the proceeds from dinner sales at the restaurant will go to the Riders group. "We are getting a percentage of the money that is collected, which will go toward veterans in need," noted Moore.

The American Legion Riders are motorcycle enthusiasts who belong to the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary or the Sons of the American Legion. Post 626 is located at 445 E. Main St., Birdsboro.

Members must own a motorcycle, 250cc or above, or be married to the owner of such a motorcycle. The group's motto is, "We ride in honor of those who have served, are still serving, and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice."

Members take part in benefit and memorial bike rides, have raised money for veterans' organizations such as David's Drive 831, and have helped with holiday bell ringing for the Salvation Army.

Past efforts by the Riders have included building access ramps for local veterans. In November 2021, the group built a ramp for a disabled veteran who served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm. Last summer, the group constructed a ramp for a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran. Along with American Legion members, the Riders installed eight replacement windows for a disabled veteran in December of 2022.

The most recent Riders activity was taking part in the Birdsboro Memorial Day Parade on May 29.

In the event of rain, Bike Night will take place on Wednesday, June 14. For more information about the Legion Riders, email Alriders626@gmail.com or visit http://www.facebook.com/Riders626.
