Agricultural Leaders Recognized

Joe and Laura Stratton of Strattons' Wynnorr Farm and the Romano 4-H Center of Chester County have been recognized by AgConnect for their contributions to local agriculture, youth education, and community outreach. During an awards event held on Oct. 23 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook Township, the Strattons received the 2026 Chester County Farmer of the Year Award, and the Romano 4-H Center received the 2026 Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.

The ceremony also featured a roundtable discussion between the award winners and the Chester County commissioners, stressing the importance of encouraging young people to explore farming, participate in agricultural programs, and develop an understanding of the industry's role in the county's economy and communities.

The Strattons have helped preserve a multigenerational family farming operation in Westtown Township while providing pathways for the next generation to learn about agriculture firsthand. The Stratton family's connection to Wynnorr Farm dates to 1924. Over the years, the farm welcomed visitors through a variety of agritourism activities, including pumpkin sales, hay wagon rides, an education station for youths, and a full produce stand, offering families many opportunities to connect with farming and learn more about agricultural production. Although the farm's agritourism activities have since ceased, the Strattons continue in their mission to uplift youth programs and help young people find meaningful opportunities.

The Romano 4-H Center of Chester County was recognized for its long-standing role in supporting 4-H and providing a place where young people can learn, connect, and explore their interests. Operated by an all-volunteer board and supported through donations and fundraising, the nonprofit provides facilities at no cost to 4-H programs. Its spaces support activities involving livestock, dairy, and horses, along with clubs focused on subjects such as cooking, sewing, and rocketry. The center also hosts agricultural education opportunities, including Lamb Camp, which brings together young people and experts in sheep, wool, and goat production.
