Presentation To Focus On Edward Hand

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a program titled "Edward Hand's Place in American History" at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive.

The speaker will be Roy Boylan, a history buff who moved to Millersville in 2005 and served as a tour guide at Historic Rock Ford, formerly the home of Edward Hand. Boylan's talk will cover Hand's responsibilities as adjutant general of the Continental Army at the Battle of Yorktown; his relationship with George Washington, including details of Washington's trip to Lancaster in 1791; and slavery, as Hand owned slaves. Hand's roles as a doctor, political figure and agriculturist also will be examined before Boylan passes along anecdotes from his days as a tour guide.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Boylan lived most of his life in the New York City area, where he worked in the computer field as an analyst, programmer and manager for insurance companies and banks. He earned a Master of Business Administration at New York University and a Bachelor of Arts at St. John's University.

Although admission is free, donations are appreciated. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. For more information, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before 5 p.m. or at pge8507@aol.com.
