Library To Close For Elevator Repairs

Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., will be closed for repairs to its elevator beginning Monday, Nov. 22. The library plans to reopen on Monday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m.

The closure will affect all library services, including passport acceptance services, IdentoGo fingerprinting services and Elizabethtown Coffee Company. Wireless internet access for downloading materials will remain available in the library's parking lot. Materials may be returned in the outdoor book return.

The construction project will address water incursion in the elevator pit. Water comes from a natural spring under the building and penetrates the pit, creating a wet environment, which over time damages the equipment. The library has tried several solutions, none of which has completely solved the problem. The issue was noted again when the elevator was inspected.

In August, the library renewed discussions with local contractors and engineers to find a more permanent solution that will both control the water incursion and move the water completely out of the pit in a manner that is environmentally responsible and that will keep the pit dry. One of the consulting firms is a company that specializes in wet-environment elevators. A three-step solution was decided upon, and construction will begin on Nov. 22.

The library will be closed during construction due to noise, dust and other aspects of the work, as well as the library's inability at that time to move people or materials between floors. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the library will test the elevator to ensure it is fully serviceable.
