Honey Brook Library Offers Summer Reading Program

It is not too late for patrons of all ages to sign up for the Summer Reading Program, themed "Tails and Tales," at the Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook. The program began on June 5 and will end on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Participants are asked to pick up their Summer Reading Program packages at the library to register, and then start reading. Those who bring in their reading log weekly will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing to earn prizes Those who bring in a nonperishable canned food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry or a donation for a local animal shelter will earn one extra ticket.

Reading logs are customized for various age groups. "Elementary school students should read for 30 minutes three times each week," explained Therese Mauchline, programming librarian. "For preschoolers, someone should read to them, and they color a photo. Young adults (YA) have to read three YA books or seven graphic novels each week to get their ticket." Adults can earn a ticket when they read one book.

Three gift baskets will be given out in each age group through a random drawing. The preschoolers' baskets contain items such as stuffed animals, bubbles, art sets and Legos. Baskets for the YA participants include gift certificates to purchase books at local retailers.

Adult prize baskets include gift certificates donated by patrons to Stumpy's Hatchet House, BBs Grocery Outlet and Olive Garden, as well as four field box tickets to the Lancaster Barnstormers along with Barnstormers memorabilia such as a baseball, cap, T-shirt and plastic stein.

"All of the (prize) baskets contain books," noted Mauchline. The drawing for the prizes will be on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Also as part of the Summer Reading Program, Family Science in the Shade will be offered on Tuesdays through Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. for children in grades one to six and their families. Mauchline will lead the group, which will take place outside in the library pavilion.
