Park Activities Set

Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature's Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event. Fire Starting and Fire Building will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 30, for people of all ages. Attendees will have the opportunity to try a variety of fire-starting methods, with and without matches, and a naturalist will show how to determine the best firewood. Everyone will collect their firewood and use it to build a fire for all to enjoy. Roasting sticks will be provided in case attendees would like to bring their own marshmallows, s'more fixings, or other nut-free snacks.

Wildflowers in Your Own Yard, for people of all ages, will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on April 30. The program is designed to help attendees learn about and develop an appreciation for the wildflowers in their own yards.

A Bug Hunt will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, for individuals age 6 and older. Participants will learn about the native and invasive insects and invertebrates that call local parks home, use a key to identify small terrestrial critters and learn how to safely handle them without getting injured. Long pants are recommended.

Deep Forest Bathing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 2. Open to individuals age 10 and older, the program will feature a guided deep listening meditation and mindful walking instruction through the forest at Theodore A. Parker III Natural Area, 244 Wesley Road, Quarryville.

Buds and Blooms, for people of all ages, has been set for May 2 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Lancaster County Central Park's Pavilion 21 parking lot, 21 Kiwanis Drive, Lancaster. Participants will take a walk in the woods to learn about flowers on the ground and in trees.

Homeschool Wednesday: Spring Stream Study will be offered twice on Wednesday, May 5, at Millcreek Campground, Campsite 5, 19 Nature's Way, Lancaster, for students ages 8 to 12. Sessions will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The stream study will reveal overwintering insects in their maturing aquatic stages. Everyone entering the water must wear closed-toe shoes like old sneakers; flip-flops and foam clogs are not acceptable footwear. Children under age 8 are welcome if accompanying older siblings, and they must be registered.

Thursday in the Park: Animal Babies, for children ages 6 to 9, will be held on Thursday, May 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Children will learn when and where they can expect to see and hear the offspring of local wildlife, as well as strategies some parents use to help their young survive. Attendees should dress for the weather and plan for outdoor activity. Children under age 6 are welcome if accompanying older siblings.

A Dusk Hike, for people of all ages, will take place on May 6 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will learn about animals before taking a walk through the Environmental Center field and along the Scout Trail, which is short and of easy to moderate hiking difficulty.
