The Pequea Valley chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA) will hold its sixth annual golf classic at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club on Friday, Oct. 9, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization, which is responsible for placing more than 3,100 wreaths at local veterans' graves on Wreaths Across America Day, held this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Pequea Valley chapter handles 31 cemeteries within the Pequea Valley, Octorara and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts.

There is a flat registration fee for every golfer, which includes a round of golf, the use of a cart, snacks and lunch. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Tanglewood Manor Golf Club is located at 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. The group from Diversified Roofing in Parkesburg won the event last year.

"They have a lovely course," said Paula Diem, the chapter's coordinator. "It's beautiful in the fall because the trees are turning and so forth. There's a lot of veterans that golf down there, so they're very willing to accommodate our golfing."

Last year, 104 golfers participated in the event. This year, registration will be limited to 132 golfers. Registration must be completed by Tuesday, Sept. 15; contact Diem at 717-587-1315 or paula@beilerinsurance.com.

The lunch varies by year and is not yet finalized, but in the past it has ranged from pork barbecue to mac and cheese to meatball sandwiches.

Another highlight of the event is its giveaway drawing baskets. Diem said there are typically around 30 baskets, which include golf equipment, balls, clubs and gift cards that have been donated by the local community and businesses. Along with door prizes, there will also be rewards for the individual who hits the longest drive, as well as for who gets closest to the pin.

The chapter is still searching for sponsors for the event. Those interested should contact Diem at the aforementioned number or email. At the moment, the event's "gold star" sponsors are Abdol and Cathy Moabery, Terry and Diane Styer, Restoration Relief, Rockyridge Enterprise, Mad Chef Craft Brewing, Friends of Bryan Cutler, Belfry Builders, Clover Property Management, and the New Holland American Legion.

"We always hope to raise at least $9,000 to $10,000," Diem said.

The Pequea Valley WAA chapter has various other fundraisers set for the fall. It will hold a bingo night with restaurant gift cards on the line on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at The Cellar at Houston Run, 836 Houston Run Drive, Gap. The organization will also hold its annual craft and vendor show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise.
