It will be a dog's day of summer.

The Millersville Lions Club will host its annual Doggie Dip event rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its pool, 314 N. Prince St.

There will be an entrance fee for each canine; humans will be admitted free. The Millersville Lions Club Pool closes following Labor Day, and the water will stop being treated so it will be clear in time for the Doggie Dip.

"It's a lot of fun," Lions Club member Bobbie Frick said. "The dogs have a blast, and it's so fun to watch them run around and smiling and jumping into the pool. And it's for a good cause."

Proceeds will benefit United Disabilities Services (UDS), a Lancaster organization that trains service dogs. UDS will bring its ambassador dog, Clover.

There will be a lifeguard on duty, and Lions Club members will make sure dogs enter and leave the pool area safely. Dog owners will be allowed to be in the pool with their pets, which are able to use the diving board if they wish. No food will be permitted inside the fence.

For the first time, there will be an agility competition for dogs that will take place in the grassy area surrounding the pool deck.

The Lions Club is seeking vendors for the Doggie Dip. The deadline to register is Monday, Aug. 24. Email millersvillelc@gmail.com to sign up. There is no charge to participate, but vendors will be asked to make a donation to help defray the cost of doggie bags and doggie gift baskets.

An inaugural photo contest will also be held in conjunction with the Doggie Dip. There is a nominal fee to enter. The deadline is Aug. 24, and photos can be sent to the Millersville Lions Club's email. Voting for the contest winner will be conducted online as well as in-person at the Doggie Dip. The site for online voting will be announced on the club's social media accounts. There will also be a dog calendar that the club hopes to have available in December.
