Anchored Ministries Prepares for Second Food Truck Takeover

After a successful first year, Anchored Ministries is bringing its "Food Truck Takeover" event back to Twin Valley High School on Saturday, May 16, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Last year, the ministry held its inaugural event that was designed to provide family fun while educating people about the nonprofit organization, which provides assistance to those in need. Nearly 800 people attended the takeover.

"We just really didn't know how many people would come," said Donna Larson, a board member at Anchored Ministries. "It exceeded our wildest expectations. We were dreaming maybe (300) or 400 people would come."

About a dozen food trucks are scheduled to participate. Everything from burgers and fries to Mexican food, acai bowls, salads, ice cream, barbecue and more will be available for purchase.

"I truly didn't have any idea how much people love food trucks," Larson said. "A lot of nonprofits have kind of more formal banquets ... this kind of suits our vibe and is just more of a unique or organic way to engage with the community."

Basket giveaways will also return from last year, along with a new 50/50 drawing. Items in the baskets include Twin Valley Coffee, movie tickets, local restaurant gift cards and more. Larson said there will be about 20 baskets.

Returning from the previous year, there will be live music throughout the afternoon. This year, Philly-area natives Second Breakfast, an acoustic duo who specialize in rock, folk and blues music, will perform at the event.

Like last year, there will be various other activities available at the event. Students from Twin Valley's National Honor Society will do face painting on kids for free. Vendors, including a florist, will also have tables set up.

Proceeds from donations received during the day will benefit Anchored Ministries. Among the ministry's programs are its mobile clothing closet, which offers new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, and its prom boutiques, which helps local high-schoolers prepare for dances and get required clothing items.

"Last year, we distributed a little over 50,000 articles of clothing," said Russ Williams, executive director of Anchored Ministries. "That equated to just shy of $500,000 worth of value that we were able to get back out into the community. The fundraising that we do will directly support getting articles of clothing out to people that need it."

Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson. The event will be held rain or shine.

"We couldn't do anything without the community," Williams said. "It's just a cool way to bless the community with just a fun event here in our hometown."
