"We try to find ways to serve our community," said Keith Shetter of Zion Lutheran Church. One of the ways the church has served has been to hold 11 summer water slide events over the years for area residents.

The 12th Water Slide Day will be held at the church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, Aug. 12, from noon to 4 p.m. As in the past, the event will include three water slides, along with free food and entertainment.

3 Monkeys Inflatables will bring water slides of varying heights to the event. "The tallest will be 24 feet," remarked Shetter, who added that a second slide called "Fire and Ice" will offer both a 21-foot and an 18-foot drop, and the third inflatable will combine a 15-foot-high slide with a bounce house.

Entertainment will include returning illusionist Papa Tater and musician Kurt Benit, known for playing keyboards, the guitar, and the harmonica. A juggler will also perform.

Local organizations expected to visit include the East Lampeter Township Police Department, the Upper Leacock Fire Company, and New Holland Ambulance Association. Franklin the miniature therapy horse, a volunteer with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), will visit as well.

New this year, the event will include carnival-style games such as a ring toss and Connect Four, overseen by Steps to Success, a Leola preschool and day care service located in the church. A rummage sale featuring educational materials and office supplies will also be held.

Free refreshments will include hot dogs, popcorn, and water, and the church multipurpose room will be open for those who wish to relax and cool off.

"We do Bible trivia (during the event)," Shetter stated, noting that clues are scattered around the grounds, and young people are encouraged to take part. "We give out about 30 gift cards (to winners)."
