Talk to Focus on Religion and Revolution

The Millersville Area Historical Society will host a presentation titled "Religion and the American Revolution in Pennsylvania: A Holy Crusade?" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The speaker will be Lee C. Barrett, the Stager Professor of Theology at the School of Theology of Moravian University, formerly Lancaster Theological Seminary. Barrett noted that the American Revolution is often thought of as a purely political and largely secular event, fueled by the desire for taxation with representation and freedom of trade. In his presentation, Barrett will explain that the revolution also had religious roots. The talk will end with a question-and-answer time. Handouts will be available.

Barrett is the author of several books on Danish theologian and philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, including "God's Will and Human Freedom" and "Eros and Self-Emptying: Intersections of Augustine and Kierkegaard." A member of the American Academy of Religion, he has contributed many articles to journals on contemporary theology, the history of Christianity, and religion and popular culture. He has four degrees from Yale University, including a Ph.D. in religious studies. Born in New Jersey, Lee currently lives in Lancaster.
