Alternatives to Violence Program Workshop
Oct 26, Oct 27, Nov 2, Nov 3
What is the Alternative to Violence Project (AVP)?
Begun in 1974 in upstate New York, AVP is an organization serving communities within and outside of correctional facilities. Trainings were begun there in Green Haven prison in New York when inmates, concerned about helping young prisoners choose a nonviolent path, reached out to the local community for assistance. Local Quakers responded and co-designed non-violence workshops with help from leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and social workers. As more workshops were conducted and facilitators were trained over the next 50 years, AVP spread throughout the United States and in 50 countries around the world.
An Alternatives to Violence Project Workshop can help:
➤ Understand why conflict happens.
➤ Manage strong feelings such as anger and fear.
➤ Deal more effectively with risk and danger.
➤ Build good relationships with other people.
➤ Communicate well in difficult situations.
➤ Recognize the conflict management skills you already have and learn new ones.
This workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday over two consecutive weekends:
Saturday 10/26 9 am - 2 pm
Sunday 10/27 1 pm - 5 pm
Saturday 11/2 9 am - 2 pm
Sunday 11/3 1 pm - 5 pm
