A-T Benefit Concert presented by Elizabethtown College’s Education Organization
Feb 3
Event Time: 7pm-9pm
Ataxia-Telangiectasia is a progressive, degenerative disease that affects a startling number of body systems. The first signs of the disease begin in early childhood and impact the ability to walk. The onset of ataxia begins shortly after and marks the beginning of progressive degeneration of the cerebellum, which gradually leads to a general lack of muscle control, slurred or distorted speech, difficulty controlling the eyes, difficulty writing, and eventually confines the patient to a wheelchair. Soon after the onset of the ataxia, patients usually show another clinical hallmark of A-T: “telangiectasia,” or tiny red “spider” veins which appear in the corners of the eyes or on the surface of the ears and cheeks. For most (about 70 percent) of children with A-T, there is another clinical hallmark: immunodeficiency which usually brings recurrent respiratory infections. In many patients, these infections can become life-threatening.
Our goal for this event is to raise money for the A-T Children’s project to help fund further research into this horrific disease so that hopefully someday soon, disease progression can be slowed and doctors can find a cure.
