Engaging Josiah Casler is living his best young life

Introducing Josiah Casler. An 18-year-old senior at Conestoga Valley High School, Josiah is an active young man. He has a lot of interests, he's immersed in many activities and he's won some awards.

In some ways, Josiah is just exploring life. In other ways, he's simply enjoying his adolescence. But in another more practical way, he's preparing himself for a healthy adulthood that's based in flexibility.

"(My interests) didn't all happen at the same time," said Josiah. "As I got better at them, I look at them like, 'If I'm going to do them, I want to do them well.' A lot of these things require focus. I just feel like I'm in the zone. I'm very productive, and they're usually things I like to do."

Josiah's interests and activities are wide and varied. They include school interests, out-of-school activities, church activities, family-oriented interests, private activities and social activities.

When asked about his favorite activities, Josiah identified bowling, building and flying drones and playing the piano - not necessarily in that order - as his top three. His secondary interests include fish keeping, teaching and helping with kids and animal care.

Josiah is ranked sixth in Conestoga Valley's 318-member Class of 2025. He has won seven awards, mostly related to academic achievement and sportsmanship; he volunteers his time; and he has formulated some very concrete plans concerning his immediate and not-too-distant futures.

"From last year to this year, my role on the team has changed," said Josiah, who's the captain of the Buckskins' bowling team and the reigning Lancaster-Lebanon League individual champion. "Last year, I was just a piece on an amazing team. This year, I'm the No. 1 bowler on the team, and I'm almost like an assistant coach. I watch everybody's shots and give them suggestions."

Josiah owns and operates 17 First Person View (FPV) drones, many of which he has built himself. It's an engineering-based hobby that, when equipped with a camera, can be applied for commercial purposes.

"I've always been interested in anything that flies," said Josiah. "My mom taught me how to build paper airplanes. My dad used to fly remote-control helicopters. Then I bought some cheap drones. I kind of left it go for a couple of years until one day my friend brought over an FPV drone. When I first watched him fly it, my jaw dropped and I said, 'This is for me.' It is very expensive, and it's really hard to fly them."

Josiah's love of the piano was also inspired by his family and nurtured by lessons from local musician Jordan Redfield. Sometimes Josiah plays for himself, and sometimes he enjoys performing for others.

"It very much depends on what song I'm playing," said Josiah, who's been playing piano for about eight years. "If I've heard songs I like, I really want to be able to play them and I want to know I can hear them whenever I want. It's usually songs from movie soundtracks and popular songs."

Josiah said he is 90% sure he would like to attend Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and major in secondary education. He also said he'd like to continue pursuing his current interests, but he hasn't ruled out pursuing new ones.

"I've had some great high school role models," said Josiah. "There are definitely times when I need to have down time. But at the same time, if I'm doing something I'm enjoying while I'm doing it, it's not wearing me down. Right now, I'm ramping up for college. But I really want to focus on the present and what I have going on right now."

If you see Josiah, encourage him to keep doing what he's doing.
