Comets ice hockey team wins championship
The Penn Manor Comets ice hockey team recently won the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League's Viola Cup during the championship game against the Elizabethtown Bears at the Hersheypark Arena. The Comets had a season record of 19-1-0 and were undefeated in the playoff series.
After the first period of the championship game, the Comets and Bears had a 1-1 tie. Penn Manor's Jonathon Boozer scored a goal in the first minute of play during the second period, which ended with a score of 2-1.
Comets goaltender Colby Barley had 31 saves in the game. The team had planned to switch goalies halfway through, but senior CJ Ulmer, the other goalie, asked that Barley stay in the game since he was playing well.
The game was head coach John Ricci's last, as he has decided to step down after many years of coaching.
In addition to Barley, Boozer, and Ulmer, the 2023-24 Penn Manor ice hockey team included Isaac Kerr, Scott Fleming, Nicholas Michener, Luke Arms, Jonah Kerr, Walter O'Connell, Jaiden Batista, Bennett Stauffer, Sebastian Elias, Lucas McDevitt, Thomas Reynolds, Justin Batista, Aydan Aliotta, and Isabella Gordon. Helping Ricci this season were assistant coaches Shawn McElheny and Ryan Good and student coach Bryce Jankowiak.
